Meme: Kumba Town United triumphs in City Council football festival.

Kumba Town United FC were recently crowned champions of the fourth edition of the Kumba City Inter Quarters Football Festival organised in Meme Division of the South West Region.

The triumph of the Kumba Town United boys over Legend FA U16/17 on a score of 2-0, concluded an exciting month-long tournament which featured a total of 12 teams.



The crowd pulling football final to mark the end of the festival was staged at the Kumba Town Primary School field.

In the highly competitive final, Kumba Town United proved to be a better of the two finalists. 

Their players displayed fine football skills, netting twice to outplay their opponents and grabbing the trophy. 

They went home with a cash prize of 1,500,000 FCFA while the second placed team got 750,000 FCFA.

Chop & Drink FC which was ranked third at the end of the tournament went home with a 300,000 FCFA. 

In terms of individual prizes, Ebongo Pedrico of Kumba Town United who impressed onlookers with his all-around talent was voted Player of the Tournament while his teammate Ngu Abega Enyang was named as Man of the Match in the final. They both got cash prizes of 25,000 FCFA each.

The organising committee named Mesakiti Leonel of Legend FA U16/17 as Best Goalkeeper for his outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

On his part, Babo Brandon from Chop & Drink FC Highest Goal Scorer, and received 25,000 FCFA and a football for his exceptional goal-scoring ability.

Meanwhile, New Layout FC was celebrated as the Best Fans Club for their unwavering support and enthusiasm, receiving a substantial prize of FCFA 100,000.

The Fair Play prize of the tournament went to Kumba City FC, with organisers, judging that they demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship. They went home with a cash prize of 50,000 FCFA.

Nkemasong Divine whose officiating was highly saluted by organisers and fans during the tournament was honoured as Best Referee.

Organised under the patronage of the Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Mewanu, the final was watched amongst others by the Divisional Officer for Kumba I Subdivision, Ali Anogu.

Tourney fostering community engagement, breeding rare talents

Speaking at the close of the final, Kumba City Mayor said the football festival isn’t only showcasing the spirit of competition but also fostering community engagement and pride in local football talent. 

 

“We’ve watched a wonderful tournament and the final today. I can say this is Kumba Champions League, because of the level of football we have seen. Let’s not forget, there’s Kumba City Football Club that is competing in the regional league and is likely to go as far as the National Interpools…So, I think it is also geared towards making sure we keep discovering talents that are actually stem from Kumba so we can reinforce our team,”.

Mayor Mewanu mentioned that the football festival seeks to “win the trust,” of the population, adding that it is equally intended to promote unity, harmony and peace. 

“We’re are glad that there’s a wonderful atmosphere in Kumba and we’re not taking it for granted. We’re working harder and keep going ahead,” he concluded.

 

Kumba I DO hail organisers

While saluting the initiative of the City Mayor to organise such competition, the DO for Kumba I football is a factor of peace, adding that the competition has contributed to return of normalcy in the area. 

“We want to first of all appreciate the population of Kumba for the love and anxiety that they have shown towards football as we have witnessed today in this football final. I want to use this opportunity to sincerely thank the City Mayor who has revamped football in Kumba…You know football is a factor of peace and it had helped to bring back normalcy in Kumba. We appreciate all the stakeholders who took part in this exercise…We saw and anxiety in young people and the quality football that was displayed, I want to say we’re impressed,” the Kumba I DO said.

Organisers have promised an even more exciting football festival during the next edition.
