Fighting Gender-based Violence: UN Women donates dignity kits to over 250 vulnerable women, girls in NW.

UN Women representative & Regional Delegate

In line with the 2024 celebration of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, UN Women office in Bamenda handed over 250 dignity kits to the North West Regional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the Family, and that of Social Affairs.

Receiving the kits on behalf of the vulnerable women and girls were the North West Regional Delegate of Women Empowerment and the Family, Wirba Hassan, and his counterpart of Social Affairs, Atemekem Ngwingmako.

The two delegations shall, in the days ahead, distribute the kits to the vulnerable women and girls under the women empowerment centres in remote areas.

The donation falls in line with the celebration theme: “Towards 30 years of the Beijing declaration and platform for action: unite to end violence against women”, with a national theme: “Responding and rebuilding after the abuse”.

It is also in the framework of the joint work plan developed to complement the ring road and gender project implemented by UN Women.

The beneficiaries shall each receive 20 litres plastic bucket, two yards of loin cloths, reusable sanitary pads, underwear, laundry soaps, rechargeable torch, toothbrush and toothpaste, stainless steel whistle, detergents, hand sanitiser and towels.

The donation meets the commitment made by the Resident Representative of UN Women in Cameroon, Marie Pierre Chaupin Raky, during her field visit to Bamenda in July 2024.

The kits also meet the request of the Regional Delegates of Women Empowerment and the Family, Wirba Hassan, and his counterpart of Social Affairs, Atemekem Ngwingmako Rebecca, after thorough deliberations with the UN Women Resident Representative.

Both officials, on behalf of the vulnerable women and girls in the region, decried the fact that their decentralised services had run short of these dignity kits to support the vulnerable women and girls and survivors of gender-based violence.

The activity equally falls within the 12 months joint work plan with activities touching the four impact areas of UN Women to meet the needs of women and girls in the North West Region raised during the visit of the Resident Representative.

The work plan was officially launched in Bamenda by the Programmes Coordinator of UN Women, Gabriel Tchokomakwa, on November 8, 2024. In attendance at this launching were regional delegates, Mayors, heads of women and civil society organisations, UN agencies and international NGOs.

The kits handed over are destined for decentralised services of both delegations like the women and girl’s empowerment centres, social centres, especially in the hard-to-reach areas where service delivery remains a challenge to women and girls.

Upon receiving the items, the Delegates expressed immense thanks to UN Women and its partners for the great sacrifice, stating that the kits will go a long way to touch the vulnerable women and girls, especially those with disabilities who are sometimes left behind.

Since the opening of a field office in Bamenda in September 2023, UN Women remains always intentional in meeting the needs of everyone in society. The UN entity for gender equality and women empowerment remains committed to meeting the needs of women and girls.
