Some 53 students, representing the 12th cohort for the Structural Master's Programme and the 5th cohort for the Co-operative Master's Programme have graduated from the African Institute for Mathematical Science, AIMS Cameroon in Limbe.

The graduates were called upon to use their mathematical skills to resolve most of the challenges facing Africa.

The students from 14 different countries across Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Kenya, among others, graduated on Thursday June 26, 2025 at the campus of the institution in Limbe, Fako Division of the South West Region.

The students had completed a rigorous training programme in various branches of mathematics, including pure, applied, and interdisciplinary fields.

The Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences is a 10-month research-oriented structured programme, while the Co-operative Education programme is an 18-month programme with a direct link to industry through work placement after ten months of training.

Addressing graduands and guest during the ceremony, Professor Wilfred Gabsa, Secretary General at the Ministry of Higher Education, representing the Minister of Higher Education, encouraged the institution and all stakeholders to continue training students to use mathematical sciences to solve problems in the society.

He urged them to use the science to resolve societal problems in Limbe like flooding, waste management, traffic and many others.

“It takes science and particularly mathematics to resolve some of the challenges we face because that is the essence of education,” he said.

Prof Gabsa said the world was theirs to explore and thus they should join the alumni and help make it a veritable networking platform for their own benefit. In this light, he promised the government’s continued support to the institution at all levels.

AIMS Cameroon trains mathematicians who should use the knowledge gained to help solve societal problems, which can help in political decision-making for the development of Africa.

The representative of the Minister of Higher Education, celebrated the management of the institution for finally fulfilling their dream of a state-of-the-art structure to host the school.

With the completion of the building and other activities at the project site, he encouraged management to seek ways to recruit more students into the prestigious school.

“It should also increase the number of programmes offered to enable it enter into more tailored programmes that can help mathematicians make better decisions for the society,” he said.

Responding to the Minister’s call, the Centre President said the new campus would enable it to have 3-4 master programmes in parallel.

Furthermore, a specialised master’s programme in mathematical sciences for teachers with four components: mathematical content, didactics, use of AI for education and school, management, administration and curriculum to streamline the teaching of mathematics in schools.

The focus on training teachers at the primary and secondary levels in mathematics will ensure children are grounded in the subject at the basic level. This is in response to the need for qualified teachers teaching mathematics to our children from primary.

“…We will bring these teachers to AIMS and train them to help them to be able to train our primary school pupils,” he stated.

In the same light, he also revealed that AIMS would be starting the Mathematics Excellence and Diversity Bachelor Degree Programme, which will consist in bringing in top two best students in mathematics at the GCE Advanced Level per region to come and have an international bachelor’s degree in collaboration with the University of Buea.

Prof Dr Mama encouraged the graduates to remember the motto of their alma mater ‘in African youth the future of science’ because by 2050, about 50% of young people around the world will be African, they are very talented in science, and the world needs them.

On her part, Valedictorian, Solange Bridgitte Difo, graduating in the structured master’s programme in fundamental sciences specifically mathematics expressed her joy coming to the end of the hectic workload at the institution.
