Rumoured resignation: I will speak on the issue today - Tchiroma tells The Guardian Post.

In a telephone interview with The Guardian Post yesterday, Tchiroma said his team will comment on the issue of resignation today. 

“Unfortunately, I made it a point of honour never to be involved at this point in time in making comments or opinions. Please, we have a team in charge of it. Tomorrow [Today] in the early hours of the day, I think that all necessary information to enlighten you, will be brought to your knowledge and rendered available,” he declared. 

Yet, despite being one of the ministers who did not attend a cabinet meeting at the Star Building Tuesday June 24, Tchiroma, remained at the heart of public debates. 

He was repeatedly mentioned in several media reports and social media hints as having out rightly resigned from the government he rejoined in 2009, as Minister of Communication.

The question that left many split, is if Tchiroma, who has over two decades been a member of successive governments of President Paul Biya, has actually resigned?  

In the wake of sweeping affirmations and counter affirmations of Tchiroma having parted and not parted company with the Biya regime, political calculations concerning the presidential poll of October topped conjectures.

For one thing, Tchiroma heads the Cameroon National Salvation Front, FSNC, that has been in alliance with the CPDM in all Presidential elections.

Reports of his supposed resignation from the government were additionally framed, side by side his recent declarations that insinuated he was nearing the time of returning home to live the realities with his people up North.

True-false resignation 

In the wake of the multiple unfounded but politically volatile reports about the supposed resignation of Tchiroma, some claimed he had informed the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, about his intension to leave.

Others still in similar light further detailed that Dion Ngute has in the last few days been battling to get Tchiroma stay on. 

Yet, other media reports had merged on Monday and Tuesday, affirming that within this week, Tchiroma is expected to resign from government and leave for his native Garoua in the North Region. 

The Guardian Post got it on good authority contrary, to the many reports that as at yesterday, Tchiroma had not resigned from government.

Tchiroma to run for president?

In the face of the many reports that surfaced yesterday, sources hinted The Guardian Post that the FSNC political party leader is possibly up to something this year. 

One of the most probable projections of what could be going on in Tchiroma’s head, we gathered, is to end his alliance with the CPDM and run for the office of President of the Republic in October.

Others are adding to the equation the possibility of Biya being pictured as having failed to keep a supposed promise of not going to seek re-election in 2025.

Biya is alleged to have promised leaders of political parties in the Grand North in alliance with him that 2018 was his last shot at the Presidency. 

Why rumored resignation generating interest

It is a little over a week that Tchiroma trembled the foundations of Biya’s alliance with political parties in the Northern Regions that form a major political bastion for votes during elections. 

At a rally, he is said to have among other things declared that: “Anyone who invites you to vote for something that is already recognised as the cause of your malaise is your enemy. Do we understand each other?

He had also thundered that: “You know that one party has caused you a problem; your young daughters remain unmarried because the young men have no professional activities (no income), despite their many prayers to obtain suitable men. But as you know, in our context, a man only becomes valid when he has an income-generating activity”.

 ‘No investment to address widespread misery’

Tchiroma is also further quoted as having said there are no investments worth the salt in the Northern Regions to empower young people.

“What's more, there is no worthy investment to help them, and they wander around in indescribable misery,”, adding that “…it's in these conditions that someone stands up and wants to force you to vote for a person or a party whose only project is to bring you more misery. Isn't that a real calamity?”

‘I’ll be your enemy if I ask you to vote for them’

Tchiroma, in what many are saying continues to shake the political landscape, is said to have also remarked that: “I have nothing more dear to me than you people. It's true that we weren't able to get you out of your misery yesterday, but today, if we unite, if we get together, we can do it. You will be put out of your misery”.

‘Search for a choice to end misery’

 Unlike in his previous outings in years past, wherein he will use such rallies to project Biya, Tchiroma is rather said to have drummed massive enrollment of the electoral register to change the status quo.

 He is reported to have also said: “It's time for everyone to do their job, to register on the electoral roll and get their card so that we can make a bold choice that will get us out of the misery of the past 42 years...”.

Under Biya’s leadership this far, Tchiroma has also served as Minister of Transport and Minister of Communication.
