European Union launches Njangui Street Theater in Yaounde.

The European Union has set a team of comedians into the streets of some Cameroonian towns, after it launched another edition of the Njangui Street Theatre last Friday, May 23, in Yaounde.

The launching that took place in the premises of the residence of the Belgian Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Alain LeRoy, was presided at by His Excellency Jean-Marc Chataigner, the European Union Ambassador and Head of EU Delegation in Cameroon.

EU officials said Njangui is born out of a Cameroonian tradition which symbolises rallying people together to celebrate good tidings.

In its refurbished form, the vision bearers intend Njangui to be a purveyor of the spirit of solidarity and sharing, be it during moments of sorrow, like when a member loses a loved one; or festive occasions like sharing together after a bumper harvest.

The EU intends to make Njangui a platform for cultural and artistic exchanges between Cameroonian and European practitioners. The institution believes that such exchanges would enhance mutual understanding of both local and international challenges, as both sides engage in sincere and in-depth dialogue.

Even more, and through Njangui, the EU hopes to create a favourable environment for citizen participation in both theatre and other artistic activities.

“By organising meetings and performances, this project aims to raise public awareness of local and global issues through theatrical performances in the public space,” Jean-Marc Chataigner said.

This phase, they added, took the group to the Ecole Premaire Francaise, Fustel de Coulanges, in the French Embassy neighbourhood, yesterday May 26. The group is also expected, Essos Mosque neighbourhood on May 27, that is today.

The troop will descend to Ebolowa, the South Regional capital on May 28, where they will hold a display at the quartier centre ville boulangerie Deli.

The team will head back to Yaounde and storm Obala on May 30. There, there, they are expected to stage a display at quartier Mboa, entrée place des fete from 3.30pm.

They will hold another show in the Tongolo neighbourhood of Yaounde, specifically at the Complex scolaire bilingue la Marfee.
