Catholic priest unveils inspiring memoir on perseverance, faith.

The 102-page memoir chronicles the Father's remarkable journey from a life of profound poverty to the sacred vocation of the priesthood, offering a beacon of hope and a profound message of faith.

Published in both English and French, Fr. Kum's book is divided into 14 chapters that vividly trace the pivotal events of his life.

In a recent interview, Fr. Kum shared insights into his humble beginnings in the slums of Esu, within Bamenda Archdiocese. He recounted surviving as a hawker and labourer before his eventual admission into St. Paul’s Major Seminary in Douala.

"My grandfather once prophesied that I would become a great man, and that I would suffer. His words proved true. Shortly after he passed away, the suffering began," Fr. Kum said. 

He described his early years of arduous struggle, selling wood to afford school fees and the challenges of living in the slums. 

His journey also took him to Bamenda, where he worked for a Nigerian businessman for eight to nine years, and left with nothing to show for it. Life then led him to Yaounde, where he took on various survival jobs, including hawker, sales boy, night watchman, and even babysitter. 

"Life was harsh, but through it all, God had a plan," the Father stated confidently.

The initial chapters of “From the Slums to Royal Priesthood” delve into Fr. Kum's birth, family background, his Presbyterian baptism, and primary school education. The subsequent eight chapters explore his apprenticeship in Bamenda, his conversion to Catholicism, and his move to Yaounde. The final four chapters detail his experiences in Yaounde and the life-altering encounter with a close friend who prompted him to consider priesthood.

Now serving as a Youth Chaplain in Douala Archdiocese, Fr. Kum hopes his story will inspire young people, especially those discerning religious vocations. 

"It’s a journey I share to encourage young people not to run away from suffering. Challenges are part of the path. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel," he advised. 

He cautioned against seeking comfort without sacrifice, quoting St. Paul: "I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I complete in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions".

The 60-year-old Catholic priest stressed that the book is more than just his personal narrative as it is a message of hope, perseverance, and faith. 

He urged support for the book, stating: "Let us pray that this book inspires young Seminarians, uplifts families, and motivates students, not the lazy, because laziness has no place in the service of God". 

Fr. Kum also seized the opportunity to advocate for increased support for internally displaced persons and the importance of quality education for vulnerable children. 

"No matter the challenges, faith always triumphs. Destiny awaits, and with perseverance, we will reach it. The proceeds from this book will be used to take care of the needy," Fr. Kum concluded.
