The people of Upper Muea in Buea Subdivision, Fako Division of the South West Region, have reaffirmed their admiration for the dictum that ‘cleanliness is next to godliness’, by winning the 2025 edition of the “Buea Clean Town Contest”.

The contest, initiated by the Divisional Officer, DO, of Buea, Abba Abdourahman, aimed to ensure that residents across Buea Subdivision keep their communities clean.

The contest is coming at a time most major towns and cities in Cameroon are overwhelmed with poorly disposed waste. The phenomenon, according to the DO, was the motivation for launching such a campaign.

The contest involved all villages and towns in Buea Subdivision coordinating themselves on when and how to clean their communities and manage waste.

After the launching of the competition, the Chief of Upper Muea, His Majesty Edward Molinge Nganje, mobilised his subjects from all the nooks and crannies to ensure cleanliness.

Chief Molinge has stated since his coronation that he is on a mission to change the image of Muea as a place of filth, criminal and drug-related activities.

The competition, according to him, presented the best opportunity to show the local authorities of the Subdivision that Muea is now the place to be.

“Since the launch of this campaign a few months ago, the people of Muea have embraced it to show the world that Muea is a place of good and positive people who do great things. We want to contribute to the development of our country, by keeping our town clean,” His Majesty Molinge stated.

The cash prize for the cleanest town in Buea Subdivision was 100,000 FCFA. In addition, tools were also given to help the villages continue the mission to keeping surroundings clean.

Addressing the top officials after receiving the prize, Chief Molinge saluted the Divisional Officer and the Mayor of Buea for encouraging the people of Muea with equipment and money. Chief Molinge promised that his community will continue supporting all initiatives that promote development and hygiene.

He asserted the readiness of the Upper Muea Chiefdom and its people to accompany the authorities in all activities that promote development.

“We are happy because winning this clean-up campaign reaffirms our commitment to support the local authorities and vision of the government, especially this clean-up campaign championed by the D.O. of Buea,” the traditional ruler stated.

While appreciating local officials and the government for constantly addressing challenges facing his people, the Chief highlighted other problems plaguing the community. He mentioned the lack of water and the epileptic nature of the electricity supply in the area.

Presenting the prize to the people of Muea, Abba Abdourahman encouraged them to embrace peace, so that development can follow. He highlighted the need for everyone to contribute to building peace in the community and respect the cultures and traditions of the indigenous people of Muea.
