MTN Elite One: PWD thrash Astres to boost relegation survival bid.

PWD’s starting IV before the Astres game in Mbouda

North West Region football club, PWD of Bamenda, have boosted their survival chances in the MTN Elite One Championship with a 4-0 thrashing of Astres FC of Douala.

The 2020 league winners picked up the huge win over their fellow bottom-place rivals on Sunday, May 18, during matchday 24.

PWD headed into the clash with memories of their first-leg encounter, where they drew 1-1 in Douala. The Abakwa Boys, who are looking to retain their top-tier status, got off to a bright start when Ndiforchu Blaise opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

The hosts returned for the second half with greater verve. Nine minutes after the restart, they doubled their lead through Patrice Belemb.

PWD maintained their two-goal lead until Ahmadou Christian Bouba came off the bench to take the game beyond reach for Astres with a goal four minutes before stoppage time. Bouba capped off his display with a brace in the third minute of added time, securing a comfortable win.

It was a memorable day for Bouba, who became the youngest scorer in the history of Cameroonian football. The young player, trained at ANAFOOT, scored a brace at just 15 years, four months, and 17 days.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Victoria United shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller. Bryan Nana scored a brace, while Abdel Borel was also on target for Victoria United FC.

Serge Daura produced a standout performance with a brace, and his teammate Jordy Youmba featured on the scoresheet for Gazelle.

The draw leaves Victoria United FC fifth and ends a run of two successive defeats in the league. Gazelle FA, on their part, remained third with 43 points.

In other games, Bamboutos of Mbouda held record-extending champions Coton Sport to a 1-1 stalemate at the Mbouda Municipal Stadium.

Fokou Tchinda scored for the hosts, while Gael Materne equalized for Coton Sport. Aigle of Moungo also edged Fauve Azur 2-1 to boost their survival chances, as they continue to sit above the relegation zone.

The highly anticipated clash of the day, pitting Canon Sportive of Yaoundé and Colombe of the Dja and Lobo, lived up to the billing. Colombe put up another impeccable display to win 2-1.

Canon's Paul Ombolo canceled Brice Sindjo's opener, but Luc Armand Bide restored the lead. The win takes Colombe within touching distance of their maiden championship title. They remain top of the table with 53 points.
