Cameroon's defence boss during exchange of gift with Turkish counterpart

Cameroon and Türkiye have reviewed and strengthened their long-lasting bilateral military cooperation.

This was the crux of an audience the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo, granted to the Turkish Minister of National Defence, Yasar Guler.

The audience took place on Wednesday May 7 in Yaounde.

The defence minister received his Turkish counterpart, who is visiting Cameroon as part of the 3rd session of the Cameroon- Türkiye Joint Commission, scheduled for May 5-7, 2025.

This session, held 11 years after the first two commissions in August 2003 and June 2014, we gathered, is a mechanism set up to improve relations between the two countries. Notably, Cameroon hosted the 2nd Political Consultations with Türkiye on February 19, 2024.

Among the concerns discussed by the two ministers during the meeting were the ratification by Cameroon and Türkiye of the Military Framework Agreement and the Military Training Cooperation Agreement, signed on January 30, 2018, in Ankara, Türkiye.

This, it was said, has given new impetus to bilateral military cooperation between both nations.

It was also revealed that projects to boost Cameroon's defence industry in partnership with the Turkish Defence Industry, in accordance with the Defence Industry Agreement signed in 2013, are being monitored by the Turkish Defence Industry Presidency, attached to the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey.

The two ministers also discussed the finalisation of the legal framework for military cooperation, including the ratification on April 27, 2021, of the Framework Agreement and the Agreement on Military Training signed on January 30, 2018, in Ankara.
