Manyu Cocoa Farmers Union thanks Biya for boom in cocoa price.

Sesseku Takor Peter Agbor speaking to the press after ceremony

Members of the Manyu Cocoa Farmers Union in Manyu Division of the South West region have hailed the Head of State, President Paul Biya, for the boom in price of cocoa.

They also hailed the Head of State for creating an enabling environment for them to pay their taxes and sell their cocoa.

Sesseku Peter Takor Agbor, president of the union, made the remarks on behalf of the union in Kumba on the sideline of a visit of the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, recently to lay the foundation stone of an ultramodern domestic gas plant.

He made the declaration while also expressing gratitude to the administration of South West Region, the manyu administrative authorities and the local authorities in their continuous show of support towards the union in carrying out their day-to-day activities.

“We want to say a big thank you to government for giving us that opportunity to export cocoa by land. Farmers who are affiliated to the union have benefited from subsidies like chemicals, farm inputs, materials and even financial assistance from the union,” Takor said.

He continued that the Manyu Cocoa Farmers Union ended the season with a turnover of 6 billion FCFA and remain grateful to President Paul Biya for the opportunity to sell their cocoa product whereever they so desire.

Sesseku Takor said he is particularly happy with the Head of State because sometime last year he made a clarion call for the youth to go to the farm and embrace agriculture and that message was well received in Manyu Division and since then they have been doing their best to live up to expectations.

He noted that they will be meeting in the days ahead to also strategise on how to pay their taxes upfront so that they can help government and in turn make profits as they prepare for the new farming season.

He further thanked the government for putting in place all necessary measures for cocoa farmers to pay their taxes. But he urged government to improve farm-to-market roads in Manyu Division so as to ensure that their products reach the market.

"We are gathered here today as one people because all of us are CPDM militants and that's why even some farmers who don't have the means to fund their farming activities, we give them assistance to open up their farms, chemicals and other incentives…” Sesseku Takor Peter said.

It should be noted that in his address to the population in Kang Barombi during the laying of the foundation stone of the gas plant, Minister Mbarga Atangana had congratulated the members of Manyu Cocoa Farmers Union for their high sense of maturity and meeting up with the regulations in force to do business in the cocoa sector and thus have been having good yields.

While encouraging them to continue working tirelessly for the new farming season, the minister called on the farmers not to relent in their support to the ruling CPDM so that they'll be able to continue benefiting from the state.
