Supporters and sympathisers of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM party, from across the North West Region, have counted what they say are fruits of the ‘marriage’ with the New Deal regime of President Paul Biya.

The party supporters, drawn from all seven Divisions of the Region, and all 34 Sections of the CPDM, alongside other elite of the Region, recounted the achievements of President Biya, who doubles as the national president of their party, in Bamenda over the weekend.

This was during a public projection of the documentary-film on the Head of State, titled: “Paul Biya; A great Statesman with an Extraordinary Destiny”.

The 90 minutes documentary-film, which traces the life and works of President Biya, was projected at the esplanade of the Mezam Divisional Office in Bamenda, the birthplace of the CPDM party.

It is a production of two Cameroonians, Cathy Meba and Solange Edimo, with an artistic touch from the Ministry of Arts and Culture, under the supervision of the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of The Republic.

Several government ministers, regional and local authorities, traditional rulers among other dignitaries, attended the projection. Elite supported the smooth organisation of the event through the North West Regional Assembly.

The public projection of the documentary-film was chaired by the Acting Permanent Regional Coordinator of the CPDM party for the North West Region, Senator Regina Mundi.

Senator Regina Mundi, in her remarks, reminded viewers of President Biya’s significant contributions to the transformation of the North West Region in all domains.

She cited the creation of the University of Bamenda, road infrastructure projects such as the Bamenda-Babadjou Road and the ongoing Ring Road project.

Senator Regina Mundi also enumerated the achievements of President Biya, especially in the health domain as well as the promotion of women affairs.

Zooming on the health sector, she cited the Universal Health Coverage scheme that allows pregnant women to pay just a token for childbirth; from the start of the pregnancy to the moment when the baby is born no matter the complication.

The scheme, she said, also enables children under the age of five, to benefit free malaria treatment. Senator Mundi also saluted initiatives engaged by the Head of State, aimed at restoring normalcy in the restive North West and South West Regions.

She cited peace initiatives of President Biya, including the creation of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration, DDR centres. Through the DDR centres, she said, an estimated 500 ex-fighters have been reintegrated into the community.

"We must embrace peace, if we want to move the North West Region forward," Senator Mundi appealed.

She added that: “This film is a tribute to Paul Biya’s unwavering dedication to Cameroon’s development. It is essential that young Cameroonians understand their history and recognise the efforts that have shaped this nation”.

Enter NW Regional Assembly President

Taking the cue, the President of the North West Regional Assembly, Prof Fru Fobuzshi Angwafo III, said the Head of State has proven that he is a true friend of the North West Region, by the continuous appointment of sons and daughters of the Region to posts of responsibility.

He said indigenes of the North West Region currently sit atop the Ministry of Territorial Administration, MINAT; the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development and the Supreme State Audit Office.

Prof Angwafo III also said the Region has many Minister Delegates and Secretaries of State. He used the event to cite exceptional steps taken by President Biya as a beggar of peace to ensure speedy return to normalcy in the two English-speaking Regions.

He said the convening of the Major National Dialogue, the Special Status accorded to the North West and South West Regions and the institution of the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator, are amongst the special considerations of the Head of State.

“This documentary teaches us about a life worth emulating- a life centered on peace, humanism, and unity. We cannot develop as a people or a nation without these values,” he stated, while urging viewers to uphold peace and stability.

On his part, Bamenda City Mayor, Paul Achobong, commended President Biya’s dedication to the North West Region, which he said, has “paved the way for countless development projects in our Region”.

"From infrastructure to education, he has continually demonstrated the commitment to uplift Bamenda and ensuring its growth. This documentary is more than a story, it’s a legacy of resilience and determination that inspires each of us to contribute to Cameroon’s peace and progress,” Achobong said.

Other speakers at the event took turns to praise the visionary leadership of President Biya that has brought much transformation in the Region and the country as a whole.

The documentary-film, it should be said, captures the early life of Paul Biya, his rise to power and his leadership models in every sector.

It also features tributes paid to President Biya for his peaceful resolution of the Bakassi crisis, the suppression of terrorist acts in the Far North Region and the uncommon wisdom in diplomacy and his leveraging the politics of football to consolidate solidarity, social cohesion amongst citizens.

President Biya’s love for peace is also shown with the introduction of political reforms within the context of a one-party system, with multiparty politics coming to light in the 1990s.

The over 2,000 sons and daughters of the North West Region who gathered in Bamenda, at the weekend, for the screening of the documentary-film left the scene with a different ideology and perception of the man Paul Biya.

The North West is the 9th Region to project the documentary-film. The last public projection will be done in Ebolowa, in the South Region.
