Far North: Kolofata gets security boost with inauguration of new Gendarmerie Brigade.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Cameroon, H.E Joris Williem Pieter Jurriens, has commissioned the newly constructed Gendarmerie Brigade in Kolofata, Mayo Sava Division of the Far North Region.

The facility was inaugurated Wednesday October 23. The diplomat commissioned the facility during his two-day working visit to the Far North Region.

Before the inaugural ceremony, the Dutch diplomat had visited the headquarters of Sector 1 of the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF, in Mora, where he met with the troops.

The troops had explained the remarkable progress they are making in their drive to push back the Boko Haram Sect.

Besides inaugurating the Gendarmerie Brigade in Kolofata, the Ambassador also toured administrative buildings, a police station and a customs office as well a modern market which are being constructed under the Regional Stabilisation Facility, RSF, in the Boko Haram-affected town.

During the visit, the Ambassador lavished praises on the remarkable strides made by the Regional Stabilisation Facility.

"I am thoroughly impressed with the outstanding work accomplished so far. This Gendarmerie brigade and other structures being built here in Kolofata will significantly contribute to reducing crimes and usher in a new era of peace. The Netherlands is glad to support the RSF that has brought confidence to the local population here," Joris Jurriens said.

For his part, the Mayor of Kolofata, Boukar Satome, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Netherlands and the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP for their tireless efforts to fostering peace in Kolofata. He also highlighted the pressing need for electricity and water.

"We are overjoyed to see these magnificent edifices constructed under the Regional Stabilisation Facility, RSF.  We have experienced some tranquillity in recent years and our people are gradually returning. We are grateful for solar energy and boreholes that have come through this programme, which have been our lifeline. We earnestly request support to make our roads accessible to neighbouring countries, which will undoubtedly boost economic activities and foster growth," the mayor added.

The Deputy Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, in Cameroon, Martin Hart-Hansen, assured the local population that they would continue to steadfastly support the region's stabilisation through construction projects like gendarmeries, police stations, and other important services.

He disclosed that the UNDP has incorporated a new phase of the programme which will run for three years, bringing renewed hope to the area.

Kolofata, it should be said, has been resilient in the face of devastating Boko Haram attacks. The Regional Stabilisation Facility has been a beacon of support, helping the affected lake Chad region to rebuild and recover.
