ELECAM says provisional electoral registers available in council branches.

The Director General of Elections at Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Dr Erik Essousse, has said provisional electoral registers are now available in council branches of the institution throughout the country.

He made the declaration in Yaounde Thursday. Dr Essousse mentioned that the electoral registers have also been put up in the country’s embassies and consular posts abroad.

He said there were compiled following the close of operations related to the revision of electoral registers launched on January 1 and closed on August 31, 2024.

The Director General of Elections at ELECAM said the revision exercise was carried out in Cameroon and abroad in conformity with the law. He said the election management body was represented in commissions in charge of electoral registers.

According to Dr Essousse: “These commissions conducted and took active part in operations relating to voter enrolment modification, correction, transfer and deletion”.

He noted that as per the law, once the revision exercise ends on August 31, provisional registers corresponding to the council branches concerned are posted up before not later than October 20.

The Director General of Elections at ELECAM said the provisional registers can now be consulted by electors and political parties.

“…in case they notice any irregularities or omissions, contact the Revision Commission or, where possible, the competent Divisional Supervisory Commission, to ensure that these are corrected, before publication of national registers of voters, not later than December 30, 2024,” Dr Essousse stated.

He said irregularities may involve biographic and biometric elements, which range from family names, surnames, date and place of birth, occupation, residence as well as fingerprints and photo of the elector.

The verification and correction of errors on the provisional registers, Dr Essousse said, has to be done before November 10, 2024.

He noted that ELECAM works within the framework of the law with stakeholders of the electoral process, who equally take part in the regional and national platforms for dialogue put in place by the Electoral Board.

He challenged some politicians, whom he said, are “submerging the media with unfounded recriminations”, to respect the law and petition revision commissions.

It should be noted that at the end of the revision of electoral registers for this year, ELECAM announced that it had enrolled 755,085 new voters.

The figures made public on September 3, indicated that more men (443,270) than women (311,815) were registered during this period. The elections management body has put the total figure of potential voters at 8,116,960.

Preparing for upcoming elections

Cameroon is due to hold presidential election next year while municipal, legislative and regional elections are scheduled for 2026. It is in this light that ELECAM is working to ensure that the electoral registers are be up to date.

The Director General of Elections at ELECAM, said the publication of the provisional lists is part of moves by the institution to ensure transparency and credibility in the country’s electoral process.

To him, the active participation of registered voters and political parties in the verification and correction of errors on the provisional lists contributes to the much-needed transparency in elections.
