Prof PLO Lumumba: Keynote speaker at virtual event

In an inspiring and thought-provoking virtual event organised by Global Peace Let’s Talk, GPLT, the spotlight shone on the concepts of Nonviolent Communication, NVC, and Servant Leadership.

The event also featured a keynote address delivered by one of Africa’s most renowned intellectuals and champions for justice, Prof Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba.

The event, attended by a diverse audience of leaders, scholars, and peace advocates, underscored the significance of ethical leadership and constructive dialogue as cornerstones for sustainable peace and good governance across Africa.

Prof PLO Lumumba, a decorated scholar, lawyer, and anti-corruption crusader, captivated the audience with his depth of knowledge and his powerful oratory skills.

Drawing from decades of experience in law, governance, and leadership, Prof Lumumba offered invaluable insights into how NVC and Servant Leadership can be powerful tools for transforming society and promoting peace.

Prof Lumumba, who currently serves as the Director of the Kenya School of Law and an Advocate of the High Courts of Kenya and Tanzania, has been an influential figure in Africa’s socio-political landscape.

His commitment to ethical governance and anti-corruption efforts is reflected in his work as the former Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission and his numerous initiatives, including the PLO Lumumba Foundation and the African Institute of Leaders and Leadership, AILL.

The event began with an introduction that highlighted Prof. Lumumba’s journey, tracing his roots from Usenge, Kenya, where he was born in 1962, to his rise as one of Africa’s most powerful voices for change. Named after the legendary Congolese leader, Patrice Lumumba, he has lived up to his namesake’s legacy, becoming a formidable advocate for justice and ethical leadership.

His academic journey was also detailed, from his early education to obtaining his law degree, LL.B, with honours from the University of Nairobi, followed by his Master’s degree, LL.M, focusing on National Security and Fundamental Rights, and finally a Ph.D. in the Laws of the Sea from the University of Ghent, Belgium.

Prof PLO Lumumba explores principles of NVC

In his keynote address, Prof. Lumumba explored the principles of Nonviolent Communication, emphasising the importance of empathy and constructive dialogue in resolving conflicts and fostering understanding.

“Communication is not just about speaking; it is about listening and understanding others’ perspectives, even when they differ from our own,” he stated.

He urged leaders to adopt these values in their interactions with communities. He also elaborated on Servant Leadership, advocating a leadership style that prioritises the wellbeing and development of others.

“Leadership is not about power; it is about service,” he asserted, stressing that only through servant leadership can Africa's leaders build the trust and integrity needed to drive the continent’s progress.

Prof Lumumba did not shy away from discussing the challenges facing Africa, particularly corruption and governance issues. With his characteristic boldness, he addressed the “rot” within many of the continent’s political and economic systems, emphasising the need for leaders who are not afraid to challenge the status quo and hold themselves accountable.

“Africa’s salvation lies in a leadership that is not compromised by greed or personal interests, but one that serves the greater good of its people,” he declared, receiving resounding support from attendees.

The interactive session that followed allowed participants to engage directly with Prof Lumumba, posing questions and sharing insights.

His responses were charged with clarity and passion, further encouraging participants to embrace the principles of NVC and Servant Leadership in their personal and professional lives.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing Global Peace – Let’s Talk’s gratitude to Prof. Lumumba for his inspiring and transformative contributions.
