Law governing archives in Cameroon: Culture minister updates public on innovations.

Culture Minister: Bidoung Mkpatt presenting the innovations

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Bidoung Mkpatt, has informed the public on recent innovations with respect to the law governing archives in the country. He was speaking recently in Yaounde.

This was during a ceremony organised to install members of the ad-hoc working group charged with preparing the texts of application for Law No. 2024/001 of July 24, 2024 Governing Archives in Cameroon.

According to Minister Bidoung Mkpatt, the texts of application will include broadening the lexical field and clarification of the terms used in the field of archives as well as the creation of a transversal public body in charge of managing the national archiving system.

The texts will also ensure the financial sustainability of the said system through a special fund to finance the development and modernisation of archives, the professionalisation of human resources in the sector, and the reinforcement of the sanctions regime for infringements relating to archive management.

“However innovative and relevant it may be, this legislative instrument can only be truly operative if it is accompanied by implementing texts,” Minister Bidoung Mkpatt underscored.

The member of government who doubles as the Chairman of the National Archives Board, added that the law gives society 18 months to comply with all its provisions.

“We only have 15 months left before this deadline expires,” he stressed, urging the members of the ad-hoc group to work efficiently and diligently.

He also urged them to focus urgently on the text relating to the public body responsible for managing the national archiving system, stating that it is the hub of the new archival governance.
