Cameroonian, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, has been appointed Senior Vice President of the African Development Bank, AfDB.

Her appointment was announced on Tuesday October 8, by the President of the AfDB Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina.



The AfDB boss revealed that the position was vacated by South African-born, Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala.

The South African resigned in order to contest for the position of President of the Bank Group, as elections to renew the bureau are slated to take place in 2025.  

Having served in executive positions of the Bank Group for more than 30 years; and rising to the outstanding position of Senior Vice President of the Bank Group, President Akinwumi said Swazi Tshabalala was qualified to seek election for the post of President of the AfDB Group, come 2025.

For the new entrant, the AfDB President also disclosed that Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade began her career with the Bank in 1991. She gradually rose within the ranks to become the Director General for the West African Region in 2018.

She then climbed to the position of Vice President of the Bank Group in charge of regional development, integration and contracts awards in 2023.

The new Principal Vice President holds a Masters degree in Applied Economics from the University of Paris Dauphine. She is also holder of As well as a Higher Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Pantheon-Sorbonne, also in France.

According to Dr Akinwumi, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade has always been regarded as a rare gem since she took up appointment in the continental financial institution.

A capability that was further exemplified when Marie-Laure put her vast experience into fruitful use as the AfDB grappled with the challenge of fostering regional economic integration.

“Marie-Laure is an experienced team manager. She is a committed and efficient worker, with a deep understanding of how the AfDB functions. She has a firm mastery of institution´s rules, processes and operational systems,” President Akinwumi disclosed. 

The AfDB boss credited Marie-Laure with having the experience and expertise needed to handle her new assignment as Principal Vice President of the AfDB.

Dr Akinwumi then gave assurance that the Cameroonian woman possesses the leadership qualities that will surely not only see her through her new assignment, but be able to use her innate dynamism to inspire the entire team both in her section and in the whole Bank Group.

For her part, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade expressed appreciation for the confidence the Bank Group President reposes on her; promising that she will ever continue to work closely with her overall boss so as to attain the shinning objectives of the AfDB.

Even more, she pledged to work in similar collaboration with the Board of Directors, to up impact and efficacy of the AfDB as the institution strives to execute programmes that benefit member states and improve the living conditions of African populations in nations across the continent.
