Yaounde 1 varsity, Military Engineering Corps officials pose in front of renovated hostel

A housing estate reserved for students of the University of Yaounde I has been renovated and handed to the government-run higher institution by the Military Engineering Corps.

A ceremony to retrocede the students’ hostel to the university officials was organised at the school campus on Friday October 4.

The Director of the Military Engineering Corps, Dr Kamgain Jackson, was represented during the ceremony by the institution’s Chief of Service for Technical Studies, Thomas Mbahe.

Speaking during the event, the representative of the Director of the Military Engineering Corps, said the works were realised within a collaborative framework signed in 2018 between the two institutions, relating to the rehabilitation of infrastructure at the University of Yaounde.

The rehabilitation works at the students hostel (Building E) was carried out within a 12 month period.

Presenting the project, Thomas Mbahe said: “Following the collaboration framework agreement signed in 2018, we did an evaluation of the works that were to be carried out in the building, which we submitted to the university. However, the rehabilitation works only started in five years later, in June 2023. The major difficulty we faced was the level of the degradation of the building between the period of first evaluation and start of works,”.

“That is to say at the time work started, the infrastructure had greatly deteriorated since it was abandoned for several years…we had to do several adjustments with regards what was initially budgeted,” Mbahe disclosed.

The works carried out by the Military Engineering Corps on on the structure, included masonry and fittings, building of septic tank and sump pit, installation of window grilles and metal doors, renovation of plumbing network, laying of ceramic tiles in bedrooms, rehabilitation of internal and external electricity network, external landscaping(paving, green areas, gutters) and painting.

The building has 32 double bedrooms; study rooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, toilet blocks, bathrooms among others. There is also the development of 200m2 of green space, 100m2 of paving and 45 ml of gutters.

A guided tour of the renovated structure, enabled the university officials to appraise the works that were carried out by the Military Engineering Corps.
