On World Teachers Day: Kamto hails resilience, role of teachers in moulding youth.

The message of congratulation is contained in an address the opposition politician read on his social media platforms Saturday October 5, as the world celebrated the 2024 edition of the World Teachers Day.

In his address, Kamot did not only honour the teachers’ vital role in the society, but also highlighted the persistent challenges these professionals face in a country where their contributions are often underappreciated.

Kamto, in his message, saluted the essential part teachers play in shaping future generations. 

“Dear teachers, on this day dedicated to you, I would like to express my gratitude for the essential role you play in shaping our youth, and hence our beloved country, Cameroon,” Kamto said. 

He underlined the fact that teachers remind the pillars that mould the minds that will occupy critical roles in society, stressing that their work lays the foundation for a prosperous and stronger nation. 

The MRC president also acknowledged the difficulties teachers endure as they go about with their daily activities, while regretting that the deterioration of the national context has resulted in their efforts being marginalised, with their demands frequently misunderstood by both parents and government authorities. 

He equally committed to stand with educators in their fight for recognition and dignity.

“Together, we will build a Cameroon that values high-quality education and vocational training of all kinds, as well as its dedicated teachers,” he added.

Criticises authorities for deviating purpose of the day 

Prof Kamto, in his address, equally criticised the way the day is observed in the country. According to the opposition leader, the day has been transformed into a festive occasion, diverting attention from the critical issues teachers face. 

“Instead of having constructive discussions on the main issues that motivated the establishment of this day, the regime in power has instead steered the players in the education system towards a kind of festive celebration,” Kamto said. 

He lamented the government's failure to address teachers' concerns about working conditions and the broader deterioration of the education system.

Kamto also reminded teachers of the origins of World Teachers Day. The day, he said, was established in 1994 to commemorate the UNESCO and ILO 1966 Recommendation concerning the status of teachers. 

The purpose of the day, he stressed, should be to raise awareness about the vital function teachers perform in society and to discuss improvements for the profession. He regretted that in the country, these opportunities for meaningful dialogue are being squandered.

In his concluding remarks, Kamto urged teachers to continue upholding the highest ethical standards, serving as role models for their students and the broader community. 

“Dear teachers, cultivate an uncompromising ethic, so as to be or remain models for your learners and benchmarks for society,” he encouraged.
