Mbororo girls in Mbengwi, Momo Division of the North West Region have been educated on ways through which they can prevent rape cases as well as succor victims of rape.

This was in a recent awareness campaign organised by a non-governmental organisation dubbed Period Dignity.

According to the organisers, the event had as main aim, to address the often-stigmatised topic of rape within the Mbororo community, where survivors frequently suffer in silence due to fear of rejection and social stigma.

The organisers added that the aftermath of rape and sexual abuse extends beyond physical wounds, plunging survivors into deep emotional trauma, depression, and a paralysing fear of society.

Through workshops and discussions, participants were equipped with knowledge and resources to combat rape in their communities and seek justice when violated.

To reinforce the message, customised Muslim kettles with empowering messages on rape prevention were distributed to the girls. The organisers said this symbolic gesture was to remind the girls of their strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

The initiative was sponsored by Rescue Women Cameroon, REWOCAM as part of its Survivor Voices Against Rape, SUVAR campaign.

The initiative brings rape survivors from all over Cameroon to a safe space that enables them mingle, share stories, heal and strategise on how to lead change missions to fight rape in their communities.

According to REWOCAM, the most important aspect of the convening is that, survivors and participants are committed to raise their voices and face the world boldly, while using their stories to spark change around the world.

In this light, REWOCAM and its partners release 4,000 dollars, approximately FCFA 2.4 million every year to survivors to implement impact projects aimed at preventing, mitigating and combating rape.
