Climate change observatory warns against floods, landslides in seven regions.

The National Observatory on Climate Change, NOCC, has warned against imminent floods and landslides in the West, North West, North, Far North, South West, Littoral, and Centre Regions of the country.

The warning is contained in the quarterly presentation of the climate watchdog’s seasonal climate bulletin.

It was launched on September 3, 2024, in Mbalmayo, Nyong and So’o Division of the Centre Region.

NOCC has also warned against the risk of natural catastrophe in zones of high precipitation gaged from two key parameters, rainfall and temperatures spanning the months of September, October and November 2024.

Revealing the weather forecast, NOCC disclosed that some regions of the country should expect intense rainfall this September.

Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV, quoted a Climatologist at the National Observatory Centre, Kiming Ignatius Ngala, as having disclosed that there will be a general outreach temperature nationwide with periods of very high rainfall in the West, North West, parts of the North, Far North and the South West Regions.

“In the West and the North West Regions, the figures might be relatively above the historical figures in the North part and South Regions. It will be similar to the Far North and North Regions,” Kiming stated.

Explaining the fluctuations in temperatures, Kiming added that temperatures are equally expected to revolve around historical averages in other parts of the country.

“In the Littoral, Centre, South and East Regions, we have a very high amount within very short period. It will be followed by periods with relatively lower amount,” he added.

Kiming went further to highlight that there are possibilities that at least seven Regions of the country with high downpour will witness floods, while a minimum of three others are susceptible of being hit by landslides within these three months.

Alerting the population to be on guard, he said “farmers, livestock breeders and the population at large must keep watch”.

The National Observatory and Climate Change also made an assessment of the last three months of its predictions, with experts suggesting more accurate tools to measure these parameters.
