Officials at the conference in Kumba

Youth of the South West Region have been urged to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism and love for country.

The call was made at day youth capacity building conference organised by the South West chapter of the Cameroon National Youth Council.

The conference ran from August 27 to 28 in Kumba. Organised under the theme: "Youths: Human capacity for a positive mindset", the conference was presided at by the Divisional Officer, DO, of Kumba I Subdivision, Ali Anugu, who represented Meme SDO.

It was attended by Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Ntemoyok Mewanu, the Mayor of Kumba I Council, Barrister Eseme Moses Esembe, the Senior State Counsel for Meme, Justice Mbuagbaw Peter, and an enthusiastic crowd of young people.

Speaking on behalf of the Senior Divisional Officer, the Divisional Officer for Kumba I, saluted the bravery of the organisers of the event lead by the South West chapter president of the Cameroon National Youths Council, Abwa Bernard Takang.

Ali Anugu particularly thanked the organisers for bringing together youth of the entire region to Kumba.

The administrator used the opportunity to challenge the youth to talk to their peers still in the bushes to have a different mindset towards their country and work towards developing their own nation rather than taking up arms against the state.

The civil administrator urged the youth to shun drug consumption. He has urged them to embrace peace and agriculture.

Earlier in his keynote address, Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Ntemoyok Mewanu, said he was elated once again to be amongst young people.

He said “government cannot employ everyone, so it's time to remind the youths of their obligations to be more constructive for a positive tomorrow”.

“The elders of today want to hand over to a constructive youth, so it's up to them to show if they can better handle managerial issues in Cameroon,” he added.

Enter Meme State Counsel

In a presentation during the conference, the Senior State Counsel of the Meme, Justice Mbuagbaw Peter, urged youth of the region to avoid drug abuse.

Working as a community with passion and love for country, the senior magistrate said Cameroonian youth must be able to love their country and be tolerant. He insisted that: “As youth, we are all leaders”.

Taking the cue during the closing ceremony of the conference, the Paramount ruler of the Bafaw and King of Kumba, Nfon Mukete IV Ekoko, urged the youth to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset.

The monarch regretted that the youth are functioning on just less than 10% of their potential. He called on them to take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered them by the state and make a positive use of it tomorrow.
