Yaounde: Gov’t says ready to host 50th OIC Council of Ministers.

Minister Mbella Mbella during a conference to announce country’s readiness

The government of Cameroon has expressed readiness to host the 50th session of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, OIC.

The country’s readiness was disclosed by the Minister of External Relations, MINREX, Mbella Mbella, in Yaounde on August 20.

In the statement, the MINREX boss assured all arrangements have been made to enable all 57 foreign ministers of the OIC member countries to work in complete serenity on August 29, and 30.

The session will take place on the theme: “Development of Intra OIC Transport and Communication Infrastructure: Major instrument in the fight against poverty and insecurity”.

According to Minister Mbella Mbella, the proceedings, which open next week in Yaounde, will be an opportunity to highlight the excellent cooperative relations between Cameroon and the organisation.

It will also be an occasion to reaffirm the ideal of a Cameroon united in its cultural and religious diversity where animists, Christians and Muslims live together in peace and harmony.

He underscored that during the Yaounde meeting, the Foreign Affairs Ministers will adopt resolutions to implement the recommendations of the last Summit of Kings, Heads of State and Government that was held in Banjul, Gambia, last May.

Minister Mbella Mbella revealed that Ministers at the 50th session will continue to reflect on ways and means of meeting the challenges facing the organisation in the political, socio-economic, security and humanitarian fields.

With just a few days left for the meeting, MINREX boss expressed satisfaction with the level of technical and material preparations, under the supervision of the Presidency of the Republic.

He announced that special arrangements have been made at the Yaounde Conference Centre that will host deliberations.

It is worth mentioning this 50th session coincides with the 50th anniversary of Cameroon’s membership in the organisation, the second largest in the world after the United Nations. With its 57 member states, the OIC also represents a population of over two billion.

Cameroon, OIC cooperation

Cooperation ties between Cameroon and the OIC has yielded several fruits including the Song Loulou Hydro Power dam located in Edea, Littoral Region, which was financed by the Islamic Development Bank, IsDB, with the main financing authority being OIC.

Other projects achieved as a result of the cooperation ties include the financing of the Olama-Bingambo stretch, the Sangmelima-Djoum highway and the Yaounde-Douala highway.

The international organisation made great inputs towards finding lasting solutions to the ongoing socio-political tensions rocking the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon, especially within the framework of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the said regions.

The OIC has also been instrumental in combating insecurity in the Far North Region of Cameroon following the insurgencies of Boko Haram, in the Lake Chad Basin and the Sahel.
