The Minister of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Social Economy and Handicrafts, MINPMEESA, Achille Bassilekin III, has launched the first edition of the Cameroon Friendship Handicrafts Fair, FAAC.

The fair, it was disclosed, provides a platform to brainstorm on the well-being and social protection of artisans and craft businesses.

The fair which comes a few days after the close of the International Handicrafts fair of Cameroon, SIARC, is underway at the Yaounde International Handicrafts Centre.

It is taking place under the theme: “Crafts and well-being: Strengthening the social security of craftsmen and craft businesses”. It is scheduled to end August 17.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Bassilekin III assured the craftsmen who had gathered to exhibit their products that the State has put in place several initiatives for their benefit.

He added that the theme underlines the importance of improving the living conditions of craftsmen through concrete measures in the field of social security.

He said for the first edition, debates will centre on mechanisms for the implementation of appropriate health, education and social protection policies.

“The aim of FAAC is to promote international craftsmanship by providing a platform for exchanges between artisans from different countries and enhance the value of their creations; encourage cultural exchanges; stimulate the local economy by enabling artisans to sell their products and expand their commercial network and raise awareness of craft diversity,” the member of government stated.

The minister revealed that efforts will be made to institutionalise FAAC by giving it a legal form. He has called on artisans to register with the communal crafts offices, as plans are being made for them to have biometric artisanal cards.

“During the ten days of the fair, you are expected to share with visitors and buyers, your genius and know-how through products that attest to the richness and competitiveness of Cameroonian crafts,” Minister Bassilekin III concluded.
