World Food Programme appreciates gov’t efforts in fighting food insecurity.

L-R: Wanja Kaaria & PM Dion Ngute, during audience

The World Food Programme in Cameroon, WFP, has appreciated efforts being made by government in combatting food insecurity in the country.

This was during a recent audience the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Jospeh Dion Ngute, granted to the outgoing Country Director and Representative of the UN agency, Wanja Kaaria, who has come to the end of her term in Cameroon.

After four years of service, Wanja Kaaria expressed gratitude to the government for its sound collaboration and the resources made available to fight food insecurity.

“During my four years as representative, we were able to serve about a million people who are in need of food assistance in Cameroon. We have not only done that with resources coming from abroad. We have also received substantial resources from the government of Cameron as well,” Wanja said.

She went on to add that: “Today, we appreciate and recognise Cameroon as being the second largest donor to the World Food Programme in Cameroon because, the government has put in significant resources to address the problem of food insecurity”.

Wanja furthered that moving forward, WFP will ensure that the country does not only depend on external assistance. She urged the government to develop self-sustaining opportunities for communities so they can become self-reliant.

Wanja further assured the government the WFP will continue to support its actions and initiatives geared toward achieving its National Development Strategy, NDS30.

According to her, Cameroon has potentials, but is facing some challenges notably the security crisis in the Far North Region caused by the insurgencies of Boko Haram, and the socio-political tensions in the North West and South West Regions, that hampers populations from accessing their farmlands.

“We continue to pray for peace so that the Cameroon’s potentials can be tapped to the fullest. These challenges are not only particular to Cameroon, and we are sure that with the political will that the government has, these challenges will be solved,” she optimistically noted.

On his part, the Prime Minister thanked WFP for accompanying the government in its quest to provide quality food to its citizens. He assured her of the government’s continuous collaboration in their projects and initiatives.
