French subsystem of education: Baccalaureat records drop in candidates’ performance nationwide.

Successful candidates about collecting their slips after results

Results of the 2024 session of the Baccalaureat examination, BACC, in the French subsystem of education, have been released with the performance of candidates recording a 38.47% drop nationwide.

The BACC is equivalent to the GCE Advanced Level in the English subsystem of education.



The results were released on July 19, by the Directorate of Examinations, Competitions and Certification, DECC, of the Ministry of Secondary Education.

Statistics show that 133,868 candidates registered for the exams in the country, with 132,920 actually sitting for the exams and 49,521 declared successful.

The examinations comprise certifications such as General BACC which is made of arts and sciences and Technical BACC. As per disciplines, the General BACC recorded 27.55% success this session.

 

National statistics & rankings

The percentage passed this year is 37.26% as compared to that of last year, which was 75.73%, officials said. This shows a drop in performance of 38.47%. 

According to the Cameroon Bacculaureat Board, known by its French abbreviation, OBC, the North West Region maintained its first position as last year, but witnessed a drop in results. The North West recorded 46.09%, compared to 84.08% in 2023.

The Littoral Region left from fifth position to the second position this session. The success rate dropped from 78.47% in 2023 to 45.98% this session.

The West Region takes the third place this year compared to its second place last year. Its percentage this years is 44.75% as compared to 80.34% last year.

The South West Region maintains its fourth position but has a decrease in success rate. In 2023, it recorded a percentage of 78.50% as to that of this session which shows a percentage of 40.62%.

The Centre Region occupies the fifth position this year, unlike last year when it occupied the third position. It has a percentage of 39.38%, compared to that of 2023 which was 80.14%.

Adamawa Region left the ninth position last year to the sixth position this session. Its success rate is 30.03%, compared to 66.00% in 2023.

The East Region takes the seventh position this year unlike last year when it occupied the sixth place. It recorded a percentage of 71.29% in 2023, which has dropped this year to 28.06%.

The eighth position is occupied to the South Region this session, from the seventh place it occupied in 2023. Its success rate is 26.49%, compared to that of 2023 which was 69.89%.

The Far North region left the last position last year to the ninth position this session, with a percentage of 20.91%, compared to 57.92% in 2023. 

The North Region occupies the last position this session, having left from the eighth position which it occupied last year. The region’s results drop from 68.95% in 2023, to 19.99% this year.

It should be noted that this year’s results aren’t the best compared to previous years. In the meantime, those who succeeded in the exams have begun making preparations to move to university in the 2024/2025 academic year.
