Gov’t says over 235,000 jobs in gestation.

A document on the employment potential of public institutions, stipulated by the 2024 Public Investment Budget, PIB, has been presented in Yaounde.
This was in a recent workshop organised by the International Labour Organisation, ILO, and the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training, MINEFOP.

Statistics from the document show some 235,714 permanent, temporary and or occasional job opportunities could be generated by the PIB this year, with 13,034 opportunities for senior staff, 45,965 for technicians and 176,714 for those in the informal sectors.

According to the document, Small and Medium Sized Infrastructures provide highest number of work opportunities, with the Far North, Centre and South West Regions having the potential to generate the most jobs, while the West, North and East Regions have low job- creation potentials.

The document further stipulates that a majority of the jobs are likely to be generated by the projects of the Regional and Local Authorities as 83 billion FCFA has been allocated to them from the 2024, PIB.

MINEFOP boss, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who chaired the workshop explained that the document shows the government’s desire and conviction to speed up the process of transferring material, human and financial skills to promote local development.

“This employment potential analysis, is an in-depth document that will enlighten decision makers, economic stakeholders, the ILO’s social partners and civil society on the primary issues relating to employment in Cameroon and the need for them to conceive job creating activities in the PIB of 2024,” the Minister said.

He also stressed on the need for the government to foster the creation of a conducive economic environment that enables employment growth in the country.

Minister Tchiroma concluded with an appeal to personnel in charge of budgeting and planning to include in their respective budgets, projects which do not only have a high employment potential, but most importantly conducive to local development.
