Bamenda: Suspected Amba fighters attack GCE writing centre, injure police officer, student.

The incident, which occurred during the early hours of yesterday at about 7:45 a.m, left a police officer and a student injured. 

The SDO said the attack was a fruitless attempt by “armed terrorists” to “disrupt the written part” of ongoing GCE exams. 

The SDO, in the release, detailed that the “armed terrorists” were successfully pushed back, thanks to the prompt and brave retaliation of defense and security forces stationed at a security post on the school campus. 

The senior civil administrator revealed that the wounded police officer and the student are responding to treatment at the Bamenda Regional Hospital. 

The SDO, in strong terms, condemned the attack, noting that it is a “violation on human rights, “particularly the right to education enshrined in our constitution as well as in other international instruments ratified by the state of Cameroon". 

He called on both the education community and the general public to remain calm, assuring that defense and security forces are “actively on ground to ensure a hitch-free examination till the end”. 

In another release signed on behalf of the St. Frederick Comprehensive High School, by Lonan Joseph, the institution said the act was done in order to frustrate the smooth start of the written phase of the examination.

The school authorities added it was thanks to the prompt intervention of security forces that only two persons, a student and a security officer, were injured.

"In the cross fire of gun exchanges between the security officers and the armed gunmen, one security officer was shot on the leg and a stray bullet shot one student on the leg, they both sustained injuries," detailed a section of the release.

The management of St. Frederick Comprehensive High School termed the act "barbaric".

"The management of St Frederick Comprehensive High School condemns such a macabre and barbaric act on an institution, which main mission is to offer education to children...we assure the public and candidates in particular that calm has returned to the campus and the GCE examination is going unperturbed with high security alert," the school wrote.

Yesterday’s incident took place two days after an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, killed two and injured 29 others in a beer parlour in Bamenda.
