EU powers training of human rights officers for effective impacts.

The European Union, EU, has powered the training of some human rights officers from across Cameroon. The training sought to boost the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

The training held in Yaounde which lasted one week. Organisers it fell within the framework of the EU Civilian Training Initiative, EUCTI. 



The five-day training on the campus of the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, IRIC, was organised in collaboration with the Foundation for Peace and Solidarity, FPS, and the Sant’Anna School of Advance Studies in Pisa-Italy. 

The workshop was officially launched by the Deputy Director of IRIC, Prof Stephane Ngwanza. The official did so on behalf of IRIC’s Director, Ndongo Daniel Urbain.

This was in the presence of the Head of the EU delegation to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Ambassador Jean Marc Chataigner. 

The representative of Sant’Anna, Prof De Guttry, also graced the occasion. 

Speaking during the event, the EU Ambassador outlined a series of efforts made by the EU Commission towards promoting inclusivity and protecting the human rights of persons and groups. 

“We are doing a lot in Cameroon for refugees, displaced persons, education and so it’s a major work we are doing together with the government of Cameroon,’ Chataigner added.

He also indicated that the EU hold dearly the values of peace, good governance, democracy and the human rights which are deeply rooted in their activities in Cameroon and beyond. 

Speaking about the EUCTI, Ambassador Chataigner noted that it contributes in enhancing human security in the conflict prone regions.

Meanwhile, Prof Ngwanza described the training course for the workshop as “special”, and insisted that their presence of the participants shows their attachment to the promotion of human rights. 

 

Lauds training initiative

While highlight the relevance of such important training, the IRIC official acknowledged the multistakeholder engagement of the different partners. 

He also noted with optimism that training and capacity building, international solidary and concerned actions are key in consolidating what the country has achieved this far in terms of the right human rights. 

Speaking during the ceremony, the FPS Public Relations Officer, Bekondo Mac Courage, explained that the overall objectives is to enhance the aptitudes of participants working as human rights experts in civilian crisis management missions. 

“It will notably promote an in-depth understanding of the tasks to be performed as well as enhance experts’ skills and attitudes to fulfill their roles,” she added.

The EU Civilian Training Initiative, EUCTI, aims to improve the life of people living in the conflict affected societies by enhancing the quality of training provided to those individuals joining the crisis management missions.

Meanwhile, the FPS is an organisation with about 20 years of experience in project management, peace education, and international training. 

For over 12 years, the foundation has organised and co-delivered programmes with focus on human rights, peace support operations for civilians, election management, and refugee protection amongst others.
