At 10th anniversary celebration: Women’s league for peace commits to further push for rights promotion….

The anniversary was celebrated under the theme: “10 years of resilience in advancing peace efforts”.

WILPF Cameroon executives, members, partners and well-wishers who attended the meeting made a review of achievements in advancing peace. They also exchanged on how to further boost activities in the coming years.

Speaking at the event, the founder of WILPF Cameroon, Sylvie Ndongmo, expressed satisfaction that the seed she and others planted is yielding fruits. She said despite the milestones, there is still much to be done.

Cameroon, she said, still faces a lot of challenges in the domains of conflicts and human rights violations such as Gender Based Violence, GBV. 

Ndongmo also said there are also challenges such as economic and social inequalities that continue to threaten the wellbeing of society.

She, however, sounded positive that, “through our collective commitment and determination, we can overcome these challenges, and build a future of justice and security for all”.

The WILPF Cameroon founder said, the organisation will continue to play a crucial role in promoting peace and human rights in the country. 

She said they will continue to work in partnership with the government, civil society, local communities and other actors to find lasting solutions to issues such as conflict and injustice.

Achievements of WILPF Cameroon

The President of WILPF Cameroon, Nathalie Foko, used the event to highlight some of the successes, achievements and challenges of the organisation since its creation.

Foko mentioned the pivotal role WILPF Cameroon played in advocating for the adoption of a National Action Plan, and Central African Action Plan for the United Nations Security Council Resolution, UNSCR 1325 on Women Peace and Security.

She equally mentioned that WILPF Cameroon contributed in the setting up of a media women network for peace in Central Africa; established a legal and judicial assistance clinic to educate vulnerable people on their rights and facilitated access to justice. 

The WILPF president also revisited the organisation’s role in the setting up of the Women’s Situation Room for peaceful elections in Cameroon with the toll-free number 8243.

Foko also said they have empowered about 600 internally displaced women and girls affected by conflict.

The Centre Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family, Nguele Meyanga Elie, who attended the event urged WILPF not to relent its efforts in pushing for a peaceful and just society.

Nguele Meyanga was particular about the NGO’s role in the peace process and other activities geared towards financial autonomy. 

“On this 10th year anniversary, encourage them to keep up with work. We call on them to partner with public authorities to help push forward government’s peace agenda,” Meyanga stated.

The Political Adviser at the Canadian High Commission in Yaounde, Marcus Davies, on his part remarked that, WILP Cameroon was celebrating ten years of solid experience and expertise in peace building. Marcus also assured the organisation of support from other partners to achieve peace.
