For lack of birth certificates: Over 11,800 pupils in North Region risk missing certificate exams.

At least 11,893 pupils across the North Region risk not registering for the First School Leaving Certificate, FSLC, for the English subsystem of education and Certificat d’Etude Premaire, CEP, in the French Subsystem of education due to the lack of birth certificates.
Officials of the North Regional Delegation of Basic Education are quoted as having released the figures.

It is reported that Lagdo Subdivision is the administrative unit with the highest number of children without birth certificates. It is said to have at least 2,383 pupils without birth certificates.

It is reported that, even with the 2023/2024 academic year fast running out, most of the pupils have not registered for end-of-year examinations. The deadline for registration is said to be the end of this April.

The 2,383 pupils without birth certificates in Lagdo Subdivision, Benoue Division, are said to be 30% of the 8,005 pupils in the Division. An official is said to have lamented that despite the setting up of about 10 civil status registries, many parents in the area are still reluctant to establish birth certificates for their children.

According to reports, besides Lagdo Subdivision, another administrative unit with a high number of children without birth certificates is Rey-Bouba in the Mayo-Rey Division with 1,798 pupils without birth certificates.

Rey-Bouba Subdivision is said to be is closely followed by Demsa, which has 1,263 children without birth certificates and the subdivision with the least unregistered children are; Touboro in the Mayo-Rey Division with 148 pupils without birth certificates; Beka in the Faro Division with 160 pupils; Guider and Mayo-Oulo in the Mayo-Louti Division with 193 and 194 pupils respectively; and Poli in the Faro Division with 201 pupils.

The rest of the localities in the North Region are said to have figures ranging from 209 in Figuil, Mayo-Louti to 985 in Garoua III in the Bénoué Division.

According to the same source, in CMII which is the equivalent of Class 6 in the English subsystem of education has 4,736 male children as compared to 4,437 female children without birth certificates.
