Horror in Yaounde: ENAM graduate allegedly kills, dismembers mother.

The incident has left the the nation’s capital in shock.

The lifeless body of Ngo Yebel, journalist and communication expert serving at the Central African Forest Commission, COMIFAC, Executive Secretariat, was discovered on April 7, at about 8:30 a.m. in the Etoa Meki neighbourhood in Yaounde.

The accused, Yebel Landry, is said to have graduated from ENAM, months. Unconfirmed narratives linking him to the incident is what has left many speechless. He is said to have trained at the institution as an Administrative Secretary.

Before the discovery of Ngo Yebel’s dismembered body parts in bags, relatives are said to have declared her missing for days. 

As at yesterday, security officers are said to have opened investigations into the matter to ascertain what happened to the journalist.

The Guardian Post could not also ascertain reports that Bateg, said to be the principal accused, has been arrested.

Alleged film of Ngo Yebel’s murder

According to reports, a fight reportedly broke out between the deceased and her son, at her home in the Damas neighbourhood. 

It is also alleged that following the quarrel, Bateg resorted to choking Ngo inside a toilet within the building where the incident occurred before later dismembering her body. 

The accused is said to have carefully packed the dismembered body parts of his mother into two travelling bags. 

He is also said to have carried out the packing of his mother’s dismembered body, with the help of his friend, whom confirmed reports identify as Lonti Junior. Lonti as at yesterday, was said to be on the run.

Bateg and Lonti are then said to have later transported the body parts to the Etoa Meki neighbourhood. Here, they are said to have dumped the remains in a small river not far from their family home.

Meanwhile, preliminary investigations by security officers are said to have led to the discovery of the deceased’s car in the Soa neighbourhood. Her two mobile phones are also said to have been found in a bush around the same vicinity.

COMIFAC demands urgent investigations

In a statement on Monday April 8, Executive Secretary of COMIFAC, Herve Martial Maïdou, condemned the killing of Ngo Yebel and urged Cameroonian authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter.

Maïdou, in the release, saluted the major role Ngo Yebel “played in promoting the conservation and sustainable management of Central Africa's forest ecosystems and above all, COMIFAC's image at international, regional and sub-regional levels…”.

Network of communicators condemns killing

The President of the Network of Communicators for the Environment and Information in Central Africa, RECEIAC, where the deceased was a member, Raoul Siemeni, in a statement issued Tuesday, condemned what had happened to Ngo Yebel.

From its head office in Brazzaville, Congo, Siemeni, said the incident is an “unacceptable act of unbearable violence and cruelty”. The RECEIAC official also called for swift investigations into the matter.

The network said her killing is “an affront to human dignity and a threat to freedom of expression and the work of communication professionals”.

The network’s president said they want “truth, justice and the condemnation of those responsible for this appalling act. The security and integrity of citizens must be an absolute priority for the Cameroonian authorities…”.

About the deceased

Ngo Yebel, it should be recalled, was holder of a Diploma in Corporate Communication and a Master's degree in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. 

Before her demise, she held the post of COMIFAC's Communications Officer. It is position she had been holding since February 2019. 

She was Head of Communications at TRAFFIC Central Africa Office, from September 2012 to November 2016.

Such horror not new to Yaounde

Such incidents are not new in Yaounde. On August 22, 2022, a certain lady, identified as Desire Beyanga, is reported to have been arrested for also allegedly killing and decapitating her sister-in-law, identified then as Marie France Mbeya. 

She is said to have committed the act in exchange for four million FCFA promised her by a “njangi group”.

This happened in the Biyem Assi neighbourhood in Yaounde. The accused then is said to have confessed joining the group through Facebook. 

She is said to have disclosed that the group had promised to give her four million FCFA, if she provided them human body parts.
