East Region: CAMWATER announces 36 billion FCFA investment to improve water supply.

The Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation, CAMWATER, has announced plans to invest the sum of 36 billion FCFA to boost the drinking water production and distribution in the East Region.
The plan was unveiled recently by the Director General of CAMWATER, Blaise Moussa. This was during activities to commemorate the 31st edition of the World Water Day.

According to Blaise Moussa, the initiative aims to improve access to water in the region to meet the demands of the growing population.

Reports from CAMWATER hold that the project will be funded to the tune of 24 billion FCFA by the government.

As part of its initiative to improve on the distribution of water in the Region, CAMWATER equally has plans to identify new water sources and integrate such into its distribution network to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water.

According to Blaise Moussa, these measures will help improve access to water in the region and contribute to peace. The investment plan, he added, also includes the construction of a water supply system in the locality of Bétaré-Oya, at an estimated cost of 12 billion FCFA.

Before this announcement, the Governor of the East Region, Gregoire Mvongo, had in a note appealed to CAMWATER regarding the situation in the town of Abong-Mbang. The administrator is said to have talked of the existing water treatment plant being in a sorry state.

According to a report presented by CAMWATER, just a small proportion of the population of the East Region has regular supply of drinking water.

Out of the 33 administrative units in the region, the company said only five are supplied with drinking water.

In this regard the company said the towns of Bertoua, Belabo, Batouri, Abong-Mbang and Yokadouma are of priority in plans to boost potable water supply in the region.

The announcement of a major investment in the water sector in the East Region, it should be said, comes three years after the inauguration of a drinking water treatment plant in Bertoua.

The plant was part of a wider project to reinforce and extend the drinking water supply in certain towns in the country.

The project was financed by the French Development Agency and the European Investment Bank. It is part of the project to reinforce and extend the drinking water supply to towns of Yaounde, Bertoua, Edea and Ngaoundere.
