A new branch of the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development, IRAD, has been officially opened in Bayangam in the Koung-Khi Division of the West Region.

The institute which specialises in potato production was inaugurated on Friday March 15 by the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, Dr Madeleine Tchuente.

Speaking during the event, Minister Tchuente said the research institute offers great opportunities, not only in terms of employment but also in terms of supply of the Central African Sub-region with this food which is very popular in the agro-food industry.

The minister in her speech, thanked the Head of State, President Paul Biya, whom she said, enabled the realisation of this project, making Bayangam the Bethlehem of potatoes in Cameroon.

The choice of Bayangam for the implementation of the potato project is based on scientific parameters, which were presented in respective speeches by the resident representative of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, IITA in Cameroon and the Director General of IRAD.

The high altitude necessary for growing quality potatoes is one of these justifications.

The IRAD Bayangam antenna, which is attached to the IRAD Bangangte station in Nde Division, reflects a concern for specialisation which takes into account the environmental characteristics of the agroecological zones of Cameroon. In prelude to its inauguration, IRAD organised a training session for trainers.

Seeds, equipment offered to women producers

On the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the IRAD branch in Bayangam, seeds and agricultural equipment as well as certificates were given to 250 women and around thirty associations.

The women underwent a training in Bandjoun on March 6, 2024, organised by IRAD. The training focused on the production and processing chain of different crops including tomatoes, potatoes, corn.

Emphasis was placed on the conservation techniques for products derived from these crops. Through this move, the Ministry of Scientific Research aims to support women’s associations in their agricultural activities.

The material made available to women complements the training they received. It will enable them to strengthen their capacities and increase their production.

Also, a special donation from the First Lady, Chantal Biya, was given to the populations through the Senior Divisional Officer for Koung-Khi.

The inauguration of the research institute and the donation of seeds and farm equipment held in the presence of several dignitaries, including the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine.
