At National Open Door Day: PCHS Bamenda students showcase industrial, technical know-how.

PCHS students showcasing talents during exhibition

Inhabitants of North West Regional capital, Bamenda, were last Friday March 15, moved by the industrial and technical know-how of students of Progressive Comprehensive High School, PCHS Bamenda.

The students were showcasing their expertise and skills during activities to mark the 31st edition of Technical and Vocational Education Open/Business Days.

The day was celebrated under the theme: Open Business Days: Showcasing the Made in Cameroon Label”.

Students of PCHS Bamenda stole the show at the event as they demonstrated in detail to visitors what they are capable of doing as far as industrial and technical production is concerned.

PCHS students, drawn from the Departments of Clothing Industry, Electrical Power Engineering, Building and Construction, Motor Mechanics, Secretarial Administration and Communication, Accounting, Marketing, Food Science, Biology and Chemistry, brought new discoveries and innovation on board.

Hundreds who attended the event were thrilled by the quality of what PCHS students demonstrated just within four months of existence of its technical education section.

Visitors were unanimous that the quality of talents exhibited by PCHS students would undoubtedly change the mindsets of Anglophone parents who believed that technical school was meant only for slow learners and low class.

MINESEC envoy hails PCHS

According to the Mezam Divisional Delegate of Secondary Education, Wankah Wilfred Nde, who presided over the occasion, the Open Door Day, activities in PCHS was a wonderful thing because it gave students of the institution the opportunity to showcase to the public what they are capable of doing.

He called on Anglophone parents who had placed General Education over Technical Education, to make paradigm shift, following what students of PCHS presented at the event.

Wankah praised the proprietor of the school and advanced words of encouragement for great strides.

"I would want to first of all appreciate the proprietor of PCHS and to say that some four months back, I was in this institution and coming back again, the story is completely different. When I visited the Carpentry Department, I was so amazed having so many machines, given that the Technical Department started operating just last September 2023," the Divisional Delegate said.

He expressed the conviction that given the large number of students registered in the Technical Department, it is visible, even to the blind that Anglophone parents who in the past thought Technical Education was meant for the weak and the destitute have changed and now see things from a different perspective.

The personal assistant of Bamenda II Mayor who represented the municipal authority at the event, Suh Eric Che, for his part, was equally full of praises for students of PCHS.

Moving round different exhibition stands, Suh said starting from the carpentry to building and construction, motor mechanics and other departments, it could be seen the students were able to learn quite much within a very short time. Bamenda II Council, he said, focuses on the promotion of education.

Enter PCHS Principal

The Principal of PCHS Bamenda, Azeh David Mofor, expressed immeasurable joy with the skills showcased by his students.

Azeh said he had worked tirelessly in all departments and specialties to ensure that there was absolute success, given that the Technical Department of the school came to the limelight only in September 2023.

Progressive Comprehensive High School, it should be said, started as an institute of stenography under the sole proprietorship of the late Bobe Yong Francis Anchia, in 1968.

The school moved from Progressive Comprehensive Secondary School to Progressive Comprehensive High School in 1991.

Meanwhile, in its new perspective to build and train employers and not employees, the school has given birth to a new baby in the name of Industrial Department, which within a very short time has scaled in leaps and bounds.

The department that started with Forms One, Two and three for the 2023/2024 academic year, is offering studies in Building and Construction, Electrical Power System, Carpentry and Joinery, Motor Mechanics, Accounting and Taxation, Home Economics, Marketing and Secretarial Administration Departments.
