Gov’t approves fare increase.

The decision, the minister said, followed consultative meetings with stakeholders in the transport sector as well as union leaders. He told the public that the increase is just by a few francs.

The minister, in his release, said the proportion increase is in line with other support measures which the Head of State, Paul Biya, ordered to reduce the burden on citizens.

According to the release, the increment concerns urban transportation and interurban transportation nationwide.

Part of the note reads that cab fare has moved from 300 FCFA to 350 FCFA during the day. At night, the amount has moved from 350 FCFA to 400 FCFA.

The cost of hiring cars by day, the release further reads, has moved from 2,500 FCFA to 3,000 FCFA. At night, the new price is now 3,500 instead of 3,000 FCFA previously. The time lap for the night, the minister reiterated in his release, is from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Similarly, children between the ages of zero to seven, the release said, will not pay taxi fares. Children aged eight to 10 years, the note said, are to pay an additional 8 FCFA on the initiative fare.

The press release also stated that the maximum fare applicable to pupils, students and persons living with disabilities is 300 FCFA during the day and 350 FCFA at night. 

Worthy to note is the fact that the fare is calculated per kilometer. The member of government in the release, however, urged transporters to respect the agreement reached with authorities. 

He equally warned that anyone who violates the provisions of the order shall be punished and sanctioned in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.

Minister Mbarga Atangana tasked the Secretary of State to the Minister of Defense in charge of the National Gendarmerie, the governor of the country’s 10 Regions, the Director of Road Transport, the Director of Metrology, Quality and Prices and the heads of various frauds control unit to ensure the respect of the new fares.
