Ngaoundere university: Rector names amphitheaters after emblematic figures.

Prof Mamoudou Abdoulmoumini, Ngaoundere University Rector

The Rector of the University of Ngaoundere in the Adamawa Region, Prof Mamoudou Abdoulmoumini, has named the six amphitheaters of the institution under his command after some emblematic national figures.

The rector announced the decision in a recent release. He indicated that the move is one of the best ways to honour people who made their mark in the Adamawa Region in particular and the nation in general.

According to Prof Abdoulmoumini, the decision followed deliberations held by the Board of Directors of the University.

In consultation with the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, Prof Jacque Fame Ndongo, the rector indicated that, there was an agreement to pay homage to the chosen individuals.

The note from the rector indicated that, henceforth, the Amphitheatre 1,000 of the university is now called Amphitheatre Ardo Issa; Amphitheatre 750 is now Amphitheatre Belaka Saoumboum.

Others are Amphitheatre 200 A of the Faculty of Science which has been named Amphitheatre Alhadji Mohamadou Abbo Ousmanou, Amao; Amphitheatre 500 is now called Amphitheatre Dr Hamadjoda Adjoudji; Building A in the university has been named Building Gole Nyambaka.

“Six amphitheatres and one building in our university now bear the names of personalities who have left their mark on the political, social and cultural life in the Adamawa Region,” the rector’s note stated.

This, he said, is because the actions of those honoured “transcended ethnic, political, geographical and religious barriers”.

The rector equally reassured that the process would continue, with the gradual naming of other spaces and infrastructures at the University of Ngaoundere in same manner.

Brief historic of personalities

Worthy to note is the fact that Ardo Issa is the son of Ardo Djobdi, who founded the Lamidat of Ngaoundere. Ardo Issa, who reigned from 1854 to 1878, recorded remarkable achievements in the region.

Ardo Issa is said to have delimited the Lamidat of Ngaoundere in the 19th century from the centre of the Central African Republic.

Belaka Saoumboum on his part was a great Mboum monarch. He reigned for 46 years between 1931 and 1977. El Hadj Mohamadou Abbo Ousmanou, who died in October 2023 and was born in 1936. He was a famous businessman who had an impact on the development of Adamawa Region and the country’s economy.

The emblematic Gbaya figure, Karnou who lived from 1845 to 1932, was noted for his relentless struggle in 1938 against French imperialism.

The former Rector of the University of Ngaoundere for 14 years, 2003-2017, Professor Paul Henri Amvam Zollo, of blessed memory, was also honoured.

The same is true of the late Dr Hamadjoda Adjoudji, born in 1937. Dr Hamadjoda died in 2018. He was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Ngaoundere from 2005 to 2018.

The popular musician, Golé Nyambaka who lived from 1943 to 1988, was also honoured. He was of Laka origin. He left his mark in denouncing social inequalities, the marginalisation of women from the northern regions and the enslavement of the population.
