Gov’t condemns Amba attacks on Ring Road, Buea.

Rene Emmanuel Sadi: Minister of Communication

Government has through a statement issued by the Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, condemned attacks attributed to Amba fighters on works on the Ndu stretch of the Ring Road project and the Monday night arson and killings in Buea.

The statement was issued January 31. Talking about the Monday night attack in Buea, Fako Division of the South West Region, the minister’s release indicated that the incident happened in Bwitingi.

Minister Rene Sadi condemned the killings and destruction of property, restating what he said is the commitment of the government to restore order.

He wrote that the “Bwitingi killing in Buea South West Region and terrorist attack on the Ring Road construction site in the North West Region,” which took place on January 29 and 24 respectively, are despicable.

Rene Sadi added that the two incidents are cowardly attacks that act as a stumbling block to the wellbeing of the population.

“The government condemns unreservedly and in the strongest possible terms, the cowardly and despicable attack on the town of Bwitingi, just as it deplores and strongly condemns the terrorist act on the Ring Road, which is likely to jeopardise the progress of rehabilitation work on this important road which the population has been calling for many years,” a section of the statement read.

The member of government urged the population not to succumb to the pressure and intimations of separatists. He encouraged the people of the two English-speaking Regions to continue to be law-abiding.

He also reaffirmed “the determination of the defense and security forces to do their utmost to restore order, peace and security in these Regions”.

Gruesome, damaging attacks

The first of the two attacks took place in Ndu on the night of January 24, breaking January 25, according to the Minister of Communication.

On that day, the minister narrated that unidentified individuals invaded the base of BUNS, the company constructing the Kumbo-Nkambe-Misaje section of the Ring Road, situated a few kilometers from Nkambe.

The individuals, as per government source, set fire on the building hosting the company’s equipment. This, he wrote, resulted in the destruction of machines mobilised for earthworks.

For the Buea incident, the statement from government indicated that, “a band of separatist fighters, armed with AK47 type weapons of war, burst into the said crossroads, opened fire at point-blank range on the people present, and set fire to four vehicles immobilised by the latter”.

The attack, the release added, led to the killing of one person. The minister indicated that other civilians were wounded.
