Disgraceful AFCON campaign: Cameroonians demand Song’s resignation.

Song was named Cameroon head coach in February 2022

Cameroonian football lovers and supporters are clamoring for the resignation of the head coach of the senior men’s national team, Rigobert Song Bahanag.

This follows Cameroon’s premature exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cote d’Ivoire.
Cameroon was eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16, last Saturday, after losing to Nigeria on a score of 0-2.
Italy-based player, Ademola Lookman, netted a brace to help the Super Eagles advance to the quarterfinals at the expense of five-time winners, Cameroon.
Since the elimination of the Lions, supporters of the Indomitable Lions have taken to social media platforms and even regular media to demand that Song quits his position as coach of the team.
Song has been blamed not only for his poor selection of players for the tournament but also his inability to properly read his opponents during matches to ensure he makes the adjustments needed to win matches.
“Let him announce his resignation before landing on Cameroonian soil,” Tantoh Lizette Nganyu, a fan of the Lions wrote.
Daduty Morgan said: “Sack him, that’s all. We only wanted him to take Cameroon to AFCON. At least he qualified the team, so it was right to let him to enjoy his AFCON and resign,”.
Another supporter of the national team, Elvis Sunshine said Song made Cameroon proud during his days as a player and if he must keep the legacy, he has to step down as Lions’ manager.
“You built a legacy that history won’t forget you but if you must keep that legacy, then you have to step down and give the job to someone who deserves it. You are gradually killing the joy and happiness you gave this nation,” Elvis Sunshine wrote.
Song has been blamed for not having any strategy to enable the Lions perform and produce results.
“When you have a coach who keeps changing the system of play, bringing in new players in every game and making substitutions that cannot help the team progress, what do you expect from him? The way the team plays is a reflection of the coach. If we continue with Song as coach, we’ll not win anything even in the next 10 years,” Nkonghi Damien voiced out.
Saturday’s defeat was the second for Cameroon in four matches in the Cote d’Ivoire tournament.
The Lions lost to defending champions, Senegal, drew with Guinea and defeated The Gambia, in the group stage, before qualifying for the round of 16.

Song says working on rebuilding project
Despite the pressure he is facing from fans and supporters, Song has maintained that he needs time to rebuild the national team.
The football manager who spoke to reporters in a post-match press conference in Abidjan, blamed Cameroon’s defeat on the inexperience of players, adding that he and his team need time to mature.
“We took a young team to the competition. Some of the players are new to the game. We gave our opponents the chance to cause us problems,” Song said.
He further said: “As I have said in the past, we’re rebuilding. We’re going to grow, that is football. The AFCON is a competition that’s played out on all levels: technical, tactical, but also mental. With our youth today, we’ve shown that we've still got a lot to learn,” the trainer said.
Sports analysts and fans however say Song sounded unconvincing.
Fans are questioning his claims of a rebuilding project, arguing that he can’t be talking of rebuilding when 16 of the 27 players he took to Cote d’Ivoire are above 27 years of age.
Since taking charge of the Indomitable Lions as manager on February 28, 2022, Song has played 23 matches, registering six wins, eight draws and nine defeats.
