The Director General of Elections at Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Dr Erik Essousse, has called for the massive registration of youth, women as well as Persons Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, on the electoral register.

He made the call January 4 during the official launching of the revision of the Electoral Registers for 2024 in Yaounde.

The campaign for the massive registration of potential voters opened at the Poste Centrale and Mokolo vicinities in Yaounde.

This was in the presence of the heads of the seven ELECAM Subdivisional branches in Mfoundi Division.

The exercise, it should be said, falls in line with section 74(2) of the Electoral Code which states that the electoral register shall remain open every year throughout the national territory. The annual revision of the electoral register spans January 1 to October 31 annually.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, Dr Erik Essousse noted that this year, ELECAM aims to step up the number of potential voters on the electoral register.

The main objective, he stated, is to add to the seven million five hundred persons registered on the electoral register.

“We encourage women, youth and persons living with disability that have attained voting age which is 20 to get registered,” he stated.

He said: “I think if we continue to work hand-in-hand with the media, we will continue to process and our aim is to surpass our cap of seven million persons”.

The official also congratulated his collaborators nationwide for keeping the registration steam alive. He equally used the opportunity to extend best wishes to all media practitioners for their endless efforts to support ELECAM achieve its target.

He also encouraged them to continue working with ELECAM to sensitise the population on the need to enroll on the electoral register.

A staff of the Yaounde VI ELECAM branch, said all has been put in place for the massive enrollment of potential voters.

“The State wants that citizens should get enrolled on the electoral register,” to be able to perform their civic responsibilities.

One of those who enrolled on the day of the launch of voter registration said: “By registering and coming later to collect my voter’s card, I will be able to perform my rights as a citizen during elections”.
