Municipal Treasurers of councils in the North West Region, have been challenged to shun unethical conducts and violations in the discharge of their duties.

The call was made by the North West Public Independent Conciliator, PIC, Tamfu Simon Fai.

He was speaking in Bamenda during a one-day capacity building workshop, which brought together Municipal Treasurers of the Region. The workshop held Wednesday December 6.

Shun unethical conducts

According to the North West PIC, the capacity building workshop was organised to caution Municipal Treasurers on the need for them to shun unethical practices.

"We have had time to formally interact with mayors and Secretaries General. This is your turn. This one-day workshop will empower you to shun unethical conduct and violations in regional, city and council services...you will enforce ethical standards to improve the quality of services offered to users and the community at large," Tamfu Fai said.

The Municipal Treasurers were drilled by experts in the domain of human rights, local council governance and administration and local council finance management.

They were also enlightened on the mission, roles and functions of the office of the Public Independent Conciliator. The lecture was delivered by Ndi Nelson, Research Officer at the office of the PIC.

They were also guided on when and where the PIC can step into their council affairs if there are any violations.

The Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development, MINDDEVEL, Mbah Mbole Pius, in his presentation lectured the participants on the ‘dos and don'ts’ of the profession.

According to Mbah Mbole, Municipal Treasurers must work diligently without being influenced by Mayors.

For his part, the Regional Chief of Councils for the North West Region, Shey Henry Nganji, guided the participants on how to manage public finance, especially in the decentralised system.

The Municipal Treasurers were also advised to work hand-in-hand with their mayors and comply with the legal text governing council functioning.

At the end of the day, the participants enumerated some of their challenges with limited finance being the prime.

According to the Municipal Treasurer of Nkum Council, Banye Patrick, the workshop was timely.

“…it comes to remind us about some of the regulations and how we can forge ahead,” Nkum said.
