Garoua: Seven from same family perish in road accident.

At least seven people from the same family, are reported to have died in a road crash on Friday November 24, in Garoua, Benue Division of the North Region.

According to reports, the family members, among whom where a mother identified as Oumar Rhama, her four children and another relative, were headed for Garoua to assist her husband in a funeral.

They are said to have left Maroua but did not reach their destination. Four of the kids who died in the accident are said to be those of Oumar.

The family members were said to be in a small car which collided with an oncoming heavy-duty truck transporting sand.

The small car is said to have exploded after the collision, leading to the demise of its occupants. Some of those who died are said to have been burnt beyond recognition.

According to preliminary reports, the vehicle, which had on board eight people, including the driver, dashed into the oncoming truck that led to the dead of many.

The driver and a child, another source is quoted as having recounted, were the only ones who survived the crash.

However, the child is said to have later on died in the hospital, owing to the severity of injuries he suffered.

Security officers are said to have later stormed the accident scene to get first hand information on what happened. The driver, reports hold, was arrested by the forces of law and order.

Meantime, investigations are said to have been opened to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap.

It should be recalled that in October this year, several members from the same family also perished in a road accident on the Yaounde-Bafia axis, precisely in the locality of Efok in Obala, Lekie Division of the Centre Region.

Like the case in Garoua, the family members who died in the Obala accident were also heading to a funeral.
