The British High Commissioner to Cameroon, His Excellency Barry Lowen, has commended friendship ties between Cameroon and the United Kingdom and pledged his country’s wiliness to continue providing support to the country.

The diplomat made the declaration in Yaounde on Thursday, November 25. This was during a cocktail organised at the residence of the British High Commissioner to mark the 75th birthday of King Charles.

It was attended by the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, other members of government, members of diplomatic corps, representatives of international Non-Governmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations among others.

Addressing guests during the cocktail, Barry Lowen explained that the United Kingdom and Cameroon share a long relationship, dating back to the 19th century when local chiefs in Douala corresponded with the late Queen Victoria.

“More recently, our present ruler, King Charles visited Cameroon as Prince Wales,” he underlined, while highlighting that both countries now share a “thick and good friendship” as they are equal partners in the Commonwealth standard.

“We share a commitment to create values; we enjoy mutually beneficial business partnerships, like UK-Cameroon Chamber of commerce,” he added.

Business, education

The diplomat celebrated the milestone covered between the two friendly countries in the business and education sectors, with hopes for strengthened ties in the sectors.

“As for business, we look forward to the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London next year; it will be an amazing opportunity for businesspersons across Africa including Cameroon to put in place business partnerships,” he said.

In the education sector, Lowen said: “We are going to continue the training of English language teachers, we also developing new programs with the British Council to promote creative and critical thinking to help to give Cameroonians the skills they need for 21st century economy”.

The UK diplomat encouraged Cameroonian youths to continue applying for the Chevening Scholarship and reaching out to the British council.

“We are really proud of Chevening scholars who are amongst the best in the world, they go to the UK, we benefit from their presence in the UK and vice versa and then they come back and take leadership roles here in Cameroon,” he said.

Cameroonian media commended

The British High Commissioner said the Cameroonian media is playing a very commendable role in fostering relations between Cameroon and the UK.

“The scope is to share experience on how to promote what is really critical, which is independent media that holds people like me and holds civil servants to account. So I think I celebrate what you do as journalists,” the diplomat said.
