Douala: Man arrested for allegedly beating wife to death.

The lady in question, Diane Yangwo, a Douala-based language teacher, is said to have died in a health facility, days after the husband got her well beaten.

Her demise has left her family members, students and colleagues of the Government Bilingual High School, Ndogpassi, in Douala III Subdivision, in a state of shock, disbelief and consternation. 

Since the news of the death of Diane Yangwo, a mother of three, broke out over the weekend, family members and friends have expressed sorrow as they mourn one of theirs whom they say could have still been alive if her husband, Bekobe Eric, did not batter her to the extent of death.

Testimonies from the deceased’s neighbours in Ndogpassi revealed that she had been a victim of gender-based violence. 

Speaking to media persons, a neighbour said Yangwo came knocking at her door on a certain Friday night, saying her husband wanted to kill her. 

"Her husband was always beating her. That night, she ran into my house, saying she needed a place to sleep. When she explained everything that happened, I told her she couldn’t stay at my place because if her husband found out she was here, he would still beat her and that will lead to more problems," she said.

The neighbour said she had accompanied Yangwo to her house that night, begging the husband to stop beating her. She said Yangwo’s husband kept repeating that "I am going to kill you". 

Yangwo was then hospitalised at the gynecological hospital in Yassa and was in a state of comma. It was at the hospital that she reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained from her husband’s punches, inflicted on her Saturday at about 4p.m.

The deceased’s sister said while she was at the hospital, “her husband went there and asked to go home and take care of her children”.

Meanwhile, in a WhatsApp voice message which has been circulating on social media, Yangwo is heard narrating her ordeal to someone she refers to as "Mama". 

In the audio, she is heard saying: “Mama, I am weak and tired. Eric will kill me, what did I do? What have I not done? Too much threats, I have no strength left..."

The deceased’s colleagues at GBHS Ndogpassi are calling for justice to take its course. They have described Yangwo as passionate teacher, who always led advocacy for the benefit of all. 

Madam Yangwo, as they commonly called her, was one to those who took part in the nationwide teachers’ dead chalk strike.

The Principal of the school, Mouen Nathalie, said she could not have imagined that Yangwo was going through so much pains at her home, adding that she wasn't expecting to hear that she had died the way she did.
