At opening of November session of parliament: Cavaye makes rallying call for collective effort to maximise mining potentials.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has made a rallying call for stakeholders in the mining sector to work towards transforming the country. According to the National Assembly Speaker, it is time for all hands to be put on deck to ensure that Cameroon moves from a country of mining potential to a mineral producing nation.

He was speaking at the opening of the 3^rd Ordinary Session of the 2023 Legislative Year of the National Assembly, which is devoted to the adoption of the 2024 Finance Law.

The plenary session was attended by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute; the Interim Minister of Mines, Industry and Technology Development, Prof Fuh Calistus Gentry; and a host of members of government and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his inaugural address, the Speaker singled out the mining sector, saluting the new dynamism that has been injected, which will boost the country’s development.

“I wish to salute, in particular, what could now be seen as mineral exploitation in Cameroon, under the New Deal and which, through industrialised mining activities or cottage mining activities in quarries, have infused dynamism in the mining sector that would certainly and ultimately give a boost to our country’s development,” he said.

Out of the 14 projects earmarked across the national territory for the sector, three are being fast-tracked for laying of their foundation stones. They include the Bipindi-Grand Zambi, the Kribi-Lobe, and the Mbalam-Nabeba iron ore projects.

Cavaye stated that the new dynamism around the three mining exploitation projects, as announced by the Head of State in his address to the nation on December 31, 2022, is an eloquent proof of President Paul Biya’s commitment to national development.

“All this is eloquent proof of the determination of the President of the Republic to have Cameroon graduate from a country with mining potentials to a mineral producing country in 2024, with corresponding economic spin-offs,” Hon Cavaye averred.

To ensure the success of these projects, the House Speaker called on all ministries concerned with the project to synergise efforts for the country’s common interest.

“The National Assembly is exhorting the ministries concerned to collaborate fully in order to collect optimum revenue in the mining sector,” he said.

The National Assembly Speaker equally exhorted the main stakeholders of different mining companies to tone down their differences and jointly exploit mineral resources sustainably.
