After failed elective AGM: Minister reconvenes Cameroon Medical Council elections for December 9.

The Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie, has reconvened an extraordinary elective General Assembly meeting of the Cameroon Medical Council for December 9.

The Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie, has reconvened an extraordinary elective General Assembly meeting of the Cameroon Medical Council for December 9.

The decision of the minister is contained in a release dated November 3. The reconvening of the elective gathering comes after failed attempts to renew the executive of the body on December 29, 2022. 

The minister said the release is based on the instructions of the President of the Republic. In his new release, the member of government has urged medics to work for the success of the exercise to take place at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex.

According to the release, the elections will hold in conformity with the provisions of articles 30 and 31 of Decree No. 92/265/PM of 22 July 1992 to lay down rules applicable to law no.90/036 of 10 August 1990 on the practice and organisation of the medical profession.

The minister also cites articles 85 and 86 of the Code of Ethics of the Cameroon Medical Council made enforceable by Order No. 5818/A/MINSANTE/CAB of 21 June 2022.

In the release, the minister disclosed that consultations have been carried out with candidates aspiring for certain positions and the outgoing executive of the Cameroon Medical Council to avoid hitches.

 

Close 3,000 medics expected at confab

According to the minister, some 2,883 medical doctors who are up to date with their dues as at December 14, 2022, are eligible to vote during the elections. He stated that the list had long been published.

 

Conditions of eligibility

Going by the release, candidates willing to be part of the executive must meet certain conditions. 

These conditions are; have at least 10-year seniority of medical practice in Cameroon; have no current disciplinary sanctions; have not been convicted;  commitment to live in Cameroon permanently; commit in writing to serve the council and uphold ethical and professional integrity. They are also expected to be up to date with financial dues.

For the post of Members of the Electoral Commission, candidates must be of Cameroonian nationality; be a registered members of the council; be up to date with their dues have at least five years seniority of medical practice in Cameroon and  demonstrate impartiality and have no current disciplinary sanctions.

At the level of the member of the Council, candidates the release noted must be a national; be a registered member of the Council; be up to date with their dues; have at least five years seniority of medical practice in Cameroon in a specific board; commit to live and work in Cameroon permanently; be available; have not been convicted of a criminal or ordinary offence, in accordance with the provisions of the law; commit in writing to serve the council and uphold to ethical and professional conduct. 

For the position of member of the Chamber of Appeal, interested candidates must be of Cameroonian nationality; be a registered member of the council; be available; have not been convicted; commit in writing to serve the council, have no pending case in court and be persons who must uphold ethical and professional integrity.

Candidates interested for the position of Auditor are equally expected to be of Cameroonian nationality; be a registered member of the council; be up to date with their dues; have at least five years seniority of medical practice in Cameroon in a specific board; commit to live and work in Cameroon permanently; be available; have not been convicted and must write commit in writing to uphold the integrity of the profession.

 

Position of President missing

Positions which the minister said are up for contest are those of; Vice President, Secretary General, Treasurer and Members of the Disciplinary Board.

The member of government in the release advised candidates to only apply for outlined positions except that of the President. 

They are expected to submit their files at the Ministry of Public Health, Sub-Department of Reception, Mail and Liaison, Rotheom latest midday of Friday November 24.
