Cameroon, China seal deal to improve fight against tax fraud, evasion.

The government of Cameroon and that of the People’s Republic of China have signed a deal which will help improve their efforts to fight against tax fraud and evasion.

The Tax Convention was sealed on October 17, in the Chinese city of Beijing.

The deal was signed on behalf of the government of Cameroon by the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, who is on mission to the Asian country.

The MINFI boss was accompanied by Cameroon’s Ambassador to the People's Republic of China, Ambassador Martin Mpana; the Director General of Taxes, Meyong Abath Roger Athanase and a host of other collaborators.

According to press release issues by the Minister of Finance on Tuesday October 17, the signing of the convention was endorsed by the Head of State, President Paul Biya.

Going by the release, the tax treaty, which is the culmination of a long negotiation process that began in 2013, seeks to improve the existing framework for the fight against tax fraud and evasion.

The treaty will equally enable the both countries to eliminate double taxation in income tax matters. 

“This important agreement marks the desire of the two Heads of State, Cameroon and China, to further strengthen the rich cooperation and close ties that already exist between the two countries,” the minister’s communique spelt out.

It is worth noting that the signing of the agreement is part of a vast project to increase the density of the country’s network of tax treaties.

The treaty is also said to represent an important step in the implementation of the National Development Strategy 2020-2030, SND30, and towards the emergence of the country by 2035, as prescribed by the Head of State, Paul Biya.
