South Governor calls for violence-free school year.

The Governor of the South Region, Felix Nguele Nguele, has called for a violence-free 2023/2024 academic year in his administrative unit.

The experienced and level-headed administrator made the appeal yesterday, as the new academic year started nationwide.

Governor Nguele Nguele was speaking on the campus of Government Bilingual High School, GBHS, Ambam, in Ambam Subdivision, Ntem Valley Division of the South Region.

The administrator, alongside his collaborators, visited the school and other campuses to evaluate schools reopening for the new academic year.

Addressing students, teachers and parents on the campus of GBHS Ambam, the Governor said stakeholders must work to ensure a hitch- free school year.

According to the Governor, the hitches recorded last year with violence recorded across several schools in the South Region will not be permitted this year.

Parents, teachers and students, Nguele Nguele stressed, must work as a team with everyone playing their role to ensure better results for the South Region.

The Governor was firm that there will be no room for drug addiction and consumption among children in the course of this school year. Nguele Nguele said all hands will be on deck to dismantle drug networks so that children will concentrate on acquiring knowledge.

He was also particular on the need for tutors to assume their role without complacency. The Governor said there is need for maturity among teachers to avoid being sanctioned.

The administrator reiterated that teachers posted to work across the South Region must avoid being sanctioned by doing their job well.

On concerns from teachers, the government, Nguele Nguele stated, is already working to address them progressively. He charged the population and education stakeholders in the South Region to trust the government in place in addressing challenges.

The Principal of GBHS Ambam, Clement Yipton, for his part, indicated that the school is still in need of teachers. He said the Anglo-Saxon section of the school especially with an influx of students who are   Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, of the Anglophone crisis, is in need of more teachers.

With a population of at least 3,000 students, the principal said actions will be taken to strengthen discipline on campus and to improve on the results of the last academic year.

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO of the Ntem Valley Division, Bouba Haman, took delight in the cosmopolitan population of the area. He described the area as a melting pot of living together and peace as propounded by the Head of State, President Paul Biya.

Last academic year, a series of ugly incidents were recorded in some schools across the South Region, prompting the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof Nalova Lyonga, to take stringent measures.
