Limbe: Minister Nalova Lyonga comes to rescue of landslide, flood victims.

Revered elite of Fako Division of the South West Region, Prof Nalova Lyonga, who doubles as Minister of Secondary Education, has come to the rescue of victims of the recent landslide and floods that hit the seaside resort town of Limbe.

The member of government, who is also a bigwig of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM party, was in Limbe yesterday to comfort the affected families.

The town of Limbe, it should be said, was hit by two landslide incidents last week. The unfortunate incident, it should be said, killed four persons.

Minister Nalova Lyonga visited the PMI Hospital at Down Beach, which suffered heavy floods, the landslide area at Motowoh and Cassava Farms.

After touring the affected areas and the health facility that was flooded, the minister doled out the sum of 10 million FCFA, as assistance to victims.

The assistance from Prof Nalova Lyonga, was handed to the 2nd Deputy City Mayor of Limbe, Emmanuel Kontchou.

The distinguished elite of Fako also promised that 50 mattresses would be handed over to the PMI Maternity Hospital.

The money, it should be said, is meant to be distributed by the Limbe City Council to the families of the victims.

The package from the member of government put smiles on the faces of the affected families.

The mattresses, she said, will be brought by her colleague of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.

Minister Nalova Lyonga, said as a Limbe resident, she feels the pain of the population and the incident in the town could not in any way leave her indifferent.

She said it was this that pushed her to rush back home, listen to the plight of the population and to offer her little assistance to help them recover from the pain.

The minister seized the opportunity to caution the population of Limbe, especially those living in risk zones, to take preventive measures in order not to be hit by another natural disaster.

She advised all and sundry not to insist to live in risk zones. She advised them to be ready to evacuate in case of future disasters.

“…we don’t want any more deaths. We have already had enough of the deaths,” the member of government declared.

She called on municipal authorities of the town to look for safer areas where those living in risk zones can be relocated.

Talking on the situation of floods, Minister Nalova Lyonga advised the inhabitants of Limbe not to dump refuge on major roads. She said poor garbage disposal is the main cause of floods in the town.

Speaking during the visit, the Director of the Limbe PMI Hospital, said the water level this year was extraordinary. She said flood waters overwhelmed the hospital and got right to the beds, soaking mattresses and beddings.

Staff of the hospital jumped for joy when the minister announced her decision to assist with some mattresses and some money.

Minister Nalova Lyonga was accompanied to Limbe by the Secretary General at the South West Governor’s Office, Gilbert Acha Nkwenti.

The Regional Delegate of Public Health for the South West Region, Dr Eko Eko Filbert, it should be recalled, had visited the affected health centre during the floods.

According to the Regional Head of the Regional Centre for Epidemics, Prevention and Control, Dr Agwe Samuel, more landslides are anticipated in the affected areas.

Dr Agwe, who spoke with reporters, after visiting the flooded areas, said the situation warrants people to vacate risky zones without delay.

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO for Fako, Mr Chaibou, had convened a crisis meeting last week following the floods to address the situation.
