Military World Cup 2023: Cameroon suffers shock semifinals defeat.

The military women’s team has been eliminated from the ongoing 2023 Women’s Military World Cup tournament, taking place in the Netherlands.

The team got booted out of the Championship yesterday, after suffering a shock 4-1 defeat to South Korea, in the semifinals of the competition.

The Military Lionesses’ defeat to the South Koreans came after a spirited fight before multiple blunders from head coach, Mike Ndoumou’s girls in the final minutes. The team conceded two late goals to have their dreams shattered.

South Korea spanked in two early goals to have Cameroon trailing early into the game. The Military Lionesses however temporarily brought themselves back into the game with a crucial goal from the ever-promising Amazone FAP attacking midfielder, Naomi Eto.

The goal from the youthful attacker however did not spark the much-needed comeback spirit within the Lionesses; especially given that their efforts were thwarted by heavy downpour.

Multiple defensive blunders partially fueled by almost no dire fight to get the equalizer, made things worse for the Military Lionesses after the South Koreans capitalised on the openings to fire in two additional goals.

The Asians got their third goal of the game at the 73rd minute before rounding up the ruthless goal-scoring festival three minutes later with their fourth goal of the day.

With the Military Lionesses out of the race for the competition’s most prestigious winners’ trophy, the team is now expected to focus its attention on the third-place game, where it will be facing either the Netherlands or France.

Shock elimination

The Lionesses’ semifinals defeat to South Korea has come as a big surprise for most football fans and pundits who have been keenly following the competition. This is mainly due to the 4-1 goal margin in the defeat and the impressive run they had in the group stages in the lead-up to the semis.

Cameroon ended the group stage as one of the most performing teams. The team sailed through as Group C winners with 9 points.

The team topped the pool ahead of defending champions, the United States of America, Germany and Belgium.

The Lionesses spanked Belgium 2 nil in their group opener. They recorded a 4-2 win over the United States of America in their second group outing before concluding the series with a ruthless 4-0 victory over Germany in their last outing to end the phase with 10 goals scored and two conceded.

The good run of results led by last year’s top scorer, Brenda Tabe, who scored three of the 10 goals, had Cameroon sitting as one of the favorites tipped to make it to the final of the tournament.

Their semifinals pairing with South Korea also had fans further dreaming of a possible easy ride to the final. This was due to South Korea’s not-too-impressive run in the group stage.

South Korea qualified for the semis as the best runners-up in the group stages. The Asians qualified after finishing the phase with 6 points behind France in a group also made up of Canada and Tanzania.
