Women’s empowerment ministry schools journalists on women’s rights.

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family has trained some journalists on the rights of women to further enhance the fight against Gender-Based Violence, GBV.

The training took place in Bafoussam recently. The journalists were drawn from print and online media platforms. The workshop was chaired by the Regional Delegate of Women’s Empowerment and the Family for the West Region, Jean Claude Nzuafo.

A team of officials from the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family from Yaounde also attended the event. Participants were drilled on the laws that protect women and girls. They were updated on the role the media can play in turning the tides given the recent rise in violence against women witnessed nationwide.

The Regional Delegate urged the journalists to intensify awareness on the protection and promotion of women’s rights in a humanitarian context.

With the conflict in the North West and South West regions, the West Region, officials said, has been receiving Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, with a majority being women and girls.

A majority of the IDPs, Nuato said, are victims of Gender-Based Violence. Given the situation, he stated that there is need for a common front with the media to tackle the situation.

“This is to make sure that, women and girls are less victims of violence and to create awareness on the fact that, these are offenses which are sanctioned by the Penal Code,” the delegate reiterated.

The journalists were advised to educate the masses on ways through which women and girls can seek justice in the face of rising incidents of violence against women.
